2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 teaser video announces mid-February debut

The Ioniq 5 is a huge deal for Hyundai as it serves as the company’s first production vehicle to ride on the E-GMP architecture developed specifically for electric cars. It’s no wonder the hotly anticipated EV has been the subject of an extensive teaser campaign, which continues today with a new Hollywood-style video. We get to see more of its design details, but more importantly, we’re learning the zero-emissions model will premiere in mid-February.

The teaser video reinforces our opinion the Ioniq 5 will look nearly the same as the Concept 45 originally introduced in September 2019 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. It has the same square shape with rectangular pixel-like LED headlights and taillights that will surely make it stand out among other electric vehicles. It’s the latest EV to receive side cameras instead of conventional mirrors, although regulations in some markets might not allow the use of cameras on a road-going car. In fact, the new teaser video shows the car with traditional mirrors.

Hyundai has developed the Ioniq 5 to accommodate both rear- and all-wheel-drive systems depending on whether the vehicle has a single electric motor or a dual-motor setup. With the biggest battery pack rumored to have a 73-kWh capacity, it’s believed the EV will be able to cover up to 550 kilometers (342 miles) in the WLTP cycle, but nothing is official at this point.

Expect an extremely spacious interior cabin thanks to a massive wheelbase stretching at 3,000 mm (118.1 inches). The Concept 45 had impressively short front and rear overhangs, which we’re expecting to see on its production equivalent as well. In fact, the Ioniq 5 is rumored to have an overall length of 4,640 mm (182.6 inches), thus making it quite compact for such a long wheelbase.

A solar roof is believed to be in the pipeline for extra efficiency, which will be further boosted by an aerodynamic body thanks to a sleek side profile with recessed door handles. Even if you’re not into EVs, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is shaping up to be an interesting car in terms of design and technology, not to mention one of the most spacious and practical cars in its segment.

Speaking of technology, fast-charging capabilities will allow a charge of the battery to 80 percent in only 18 minutes or so we’ve heard. A fully digital instrument cluster measuring 12.3 inches is planned, as is an expansive head-up display with augmented reality. There should also be a sophisticated level 2 semi-autonomous driving system and even bi-directional charging.

We’re hoping to learn more about the Ioniq 5 in the coming days, ahead of its mid-February world premiere.
