General Motors is spending $35 billion to launch no fewer than 30 purely electric cars by the end of the decade. The EV onslaught has already commenced with the likes of the GMC Hummer EV pickup truck and SUV, the Chevy Silverado EV, Cadillac Lyriq, and others. However, GM has been relatively coy on details about how it plans to electrify Buick.

Thankfully, a post on Twitter provides an early look at what GM has in store for Buick in regards to EVs. The comment is actually a reply to a question asked by its parent company about which of the four vehicles would be suitable for the boss. The screenshot from this year’s Super Bowl ad shows the Silverado EV next to the Hummer, Lyriq, and the BrightDrop electric delivery van.

We are being told the mysterious electric model in question will be unveiled sometime this summer. Buick says it will be “groovy” – as a nod to the Austin Powers-themed Super Bowl ad. In case you haven’t seen the movies, the protagonist – played by Mike Myers – uses that word repeatedly. The sole teaser image clearly states it’s a concept car, which means a production version won’t arrive until the end of 2023 or early 2024 in a best-case scenario.

As to which shape the vehicle will take, it is believed Buick is planning not one, but two electric crossovers. It could bear the “Electra” moniker as a follow-up to the namesake concept from the Auto Shanghai 2020. It has had the rights to the nameplate in the United States for 20 years and received approval in Canada in December last year.

Much like the other recent EVs from General Motors, expect Buick’s new zero-emissions model to ride on the Ultium platform. In fact, the aforementioned Electra concept had the same underpinnings and was shaped like a sleek mashup between a crossover and a grand tourer. The showcar was touted as having 410 miles (660 kilometers) of range and 583 horsepower on tap, good for a 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) run in 4.3 seconds.

The proliferation of crossovers and SUVs has had a negative impact on minivans as customer demand for MPVs has drastically decreased in the last couple of decades. However, the body style remains quite popular in China, so much so that Buick considers a family hauler can serve as a range-topping model. The GL8 Flagship concept unveiled at Auto Guangzhou 2021 acts as a vision into the brand’s future in which the luxury minivan sits at the very top of the firm’s portfolio.

Developed in collaboration with the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC), the premium minivan has a bold design with sleek headlights shaped like a boomerang and a closed-off grille denoting it is fully electric. The greenhouse is one of the most unusual we’ve seen lately, while the traditional side mirrors have been replaced by cameras to give the profile a cleaner look.

As you would expect from a concept car, the Buick GL8 Flagship has massive wheels and does away with the B-pillar to make it easier to get in and out of the cabin. It’s still a minivan with sliding rear doors, spacious enough to accommodate the whole family in a cozy interior featuring a giant 30-inch screen. Interestingly, there’s a small touchscreen embedded into the steering wheel where you’d normally find the airbag.

As far as the Smart Pod is concerned, it foretells an even more distant future, one in which we will all be passengers in our own cars. Buick has removed the steering wheel altogether, suggesting the unusual concept is fully autonomous with an even bigger screen inside, measuring a whopping 50 inches. It rides on General Motors’ Ultium platform and boasts micro-LEDs instead of conventional headlights and taillights.

The real magic is inside where the Buick Smart Pod has everything from deployable tables and an air purifying system to noise-canceling tech and a sleep seat that fully reclines. It goes without saying the concept is too wild to reach production anytime soon, but the GL8 Flagship is likely a preview of the luxury minivan’s next generation arriving in the next few years.
