Ferrari originally announced the Purosangue back in September 2018 but we haven’t heard anything about Maranello’s first SUV ever since. Thankfully, the Italians have uploaded onto their corporate website a document regarding how it performed during 2021 in terms of sales, revenue, and whatnot. Why is that relevant? Because it includes a juicy tidbit about when the high-riding Prancing Horse will finally break cover.

Tucked away in the document on page 12 is news about the Purosangue entering production sometime this year. In addition, Ferrari says it will kick off customer deliveries in 2023, which tells us it won’t be until closer to this year’s end when assembly will start. It’s the only time the SUV is mentioned in the document, so other new details have not been disclosed.

However, when the “Ferrari Utility Vehicle” was announced, the company did share some interesting details about its belated answer to the Lamborghini Urus. It promised the Purosangue would be the most exciting SUV to drive in its segment while offering “revolutionary accessibility and state-of-the-art comfort.”

It will be underpinned by a newly developed front-mid-engined architecture with support for all-wheel drive and an adjustable ride height courtesy of an air suspension. The Ferrari Purosangue will have a transaxle double-clutch automatic transmission and a hybrid powertrain. Although the battery’s size has not been specified, we do know the SUV will offer an unspecified amount of pure electric range. That tells us it will be a plug-in hybrid.

Several powertrains are being conceived for the platform, with the combustion engine sitting between the front axle and the driver. The PHEV system will deliver the “highest power output plus electric motor.” The latter will send power to the rear axle for an SUV that will accommodate four people.

With production commencing late this year, logic tells us the official premiere will take place by mid-2022. As seen above, prototypes have already switched to a heavily camouflaged production body after test mules were spotted looking like a modified Maserati Levante.

The Ferrari Testa Rossa, one of the most important models to carry the fabled Prancing Horse logo, is back for 2021. Before you get too excited, this isn’t a continuation car or a modern revival of the late 1950s / early 1960s racer as it takes the shape of a 75% replica developed in collaboration with The Little Car Company.

It’s a company that specializes in the production of junior cars and has teamed up with Ferrari to create a scaled-down tribute of the Testa Rossa, complete with an electric powertrain. Obviously not homologated for road use, the EV can be driven by anyone over 14 years of age and has been conceived to mimic the original barchetta version designed by Scaglietti.

Being a Ferrari-backed official replica, you can rest assured it’s a faithful interpretation of the Testa Rossa as the team behind the junior version used original paper drawings from the Ferrari Classiche Department. It carries over the steering and suspension geometry of the actual car, while the interior is also an accurate replica of the real thing. Take for example the steering wheel, which is made by Nardi – the very same company that supplied the 1957 Testa Rossa.

While the classic dials have been retained, these have been updated to reflect the Testa Rossa J’s electric nature. For example, the fuel gauge now serves as a battery gauge while the tachometer has been repurposed as a speedometer. Interestingly, there’s even a power gauge showing the level of regenerative braking.

It rides on 12-inch handmade wire wheels wrapped in Pirelli tires and borrows the pedals from the F8 Tributo. Bilstein coilover dampers and custom springs were used for the suspension, which has been fine-tuned at Ferrari’s own Fiorano test track at home in Maranello, Italy. Reinforced metal side panels and Brembo disc brakes were installed for added safety, while an optional roll-bar can be added by anchoring it to the chassis.

Power is provided by an electric motor developing a mighty 1 kilowatt (1.34 horsepower) when the Novice mode is activated. Switch to Comfort mode and the output rises to 4 kW (5.3 hp). Depending on the selected driving mode, the Testa Rossa J can do anywhere between 20 to more than 60 km/h (12 to 37 mph). Three battery packs have enough juice for a maximum range of 90 kilometers (56 miles).

The Testa Rossa J is more than just a one-off creation as it will actually be produced in 299 units, at an eye-watering €93,000 (about $110,000) a pop before taxes, shipping costs, and optional features. There’s even an online configurator allowing customers to pick from no fewer than 53 body colors, 14 historical liveries, and other extras.

Ferrari 296 GTB plug-in hybrid supercar debuts with 16-mile electric range https://evglobe.com/2021/06/24/ferrari-296-gtb-hybrid-specs/ https://evglobe.com/2021/06/24/ferrari-296-gtb-hybrid-specs/#respond Thu, 24 Jun 2021 12:30:15 +0000 https://evglobe.com/?p=8200 Following the 2013 LaFerrari hybrid and the 2019 SF90 Stradale plug-in hybrid, Ferrari is introducing its third electrified car. Following the 2013 LaFerrari hybrid and the 2019 SF90 Stradale plug-in hybrid, Ferrari is introducing its third electrified car. While the first one had a big V12 and was followed by a V8 machine, the new 296 GTB downsizes the powertrain recipe to a V6 with a 3.0-liter displacement and a pair of turbochargers. It works together with a single electric motor, enabling a combined power of 818 horsepower (610 kilowatts) and 564 pound-feet (740 Newton-meters) of torque.

Even though it has only a V6 engine, the car’s performance is nothing short of amazing. It needs as little as 2.9 seconds to reach 62 mph (100 km/h) from a standstill, which makes it just as quick as the F8 Tributo with its larger V8 engine. As a matter of fact, the 0-124 mph (0-200 km/h) task is completed half a second quicker, with the new 296 GTB needing 7.3 seconds to get the job done.

Since the plug-in hybrid system is mainly about performance, it shouldn’t come as a surprise the battery is rather small. It has a capacity of 7.45 kWh and sits beneath the floor to offer an electric range of up to 25 kilometers (16 miles). Despite the added hardware associated with a PHEV system, Ferrari says the car weighs only 3,241 lbs (1,470 kg) in its lightest form, before adding fluids and a driver.

With a top speed of over 205 mph (330 km/h), the 296 GTB is not exactly slow despite its smaller engine. Mounted in the rear, the electric motor develops 164 horsepower (122 kilowatts) and assists the combustion engine to deliver V8-like performance but with greater fuel efficiency. Ferrari’s engineers adapted the dual-clutch, eight-speed auto from other models that use this transmission, including the SF90 Stradale / Spider.

Tested at Ferrari’s in-house Fiorano circuit, the 296 GTB completed a lap of the race track in 1:21, thus shaving off one and a half seconds from the F8 Tributo’s lap time. It goes to show electrification and performance go hand in hand, even though some will see downsizing to a V6 as a deal-breaker.

The plug-in hybrid powertrain is certainly not a one-time affair as Ferrari is expected to implement the PHEV system in future models. One possible application is the Purosangue, the brand’s hotly anticipated SUV scheduled to come out at some point next year.
