Toyota has vowed to expand its Gazoo Racing offerings across the entire lineup and is living up to that promise by giving the bZ4X electric SUV the GR treatment. Introduced today at the 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon in Japan, the vehicle is a concept for the time being, although it’s likely a matter of time before it will go on sale.

It’s all show without any extra go as the bZ4X GR Sport consists of visual upgrades while retaining the hardware of the regular production model. To make it stand out, Toyota through its performance division has installed wider tires for better grip and has painted some of the exterior body panels in matte black. Images of the interior have not been provided, but we do know it has sports seats.

We’ll remind you the zero-emission SUV has a 71.4-kWh battery pack if you stick to the front-wheel-drive model while the AWD-equipped version gets a slightly bigger 72.8-kWh battery. In terms of power, the base model makes do with 201 hp (150 kW) channeled to the front axle while the all-wheel-drive variant has a pair of 107-hp (80-kW) motors for a combined output of 215 hp (160 kW).

In terms of performance, the single-motor Toyota bZ4X does the 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) sprint in 8.4 seconds while upgrading to the dual-motor setup reduces the time to 7.7 seconds. Needless to say, the FWD model is lighter by tipping the scales at 4,232 pounds, but should you want more oomph, the dual-motor SUV tips the scales at 4,420 pounds.

It’s worth mentioning Toyota has promised the battery will retain 90 percent of its capacity even after using the vehicle for 10 years. Speaking of which, the battery can be charged at up to 150 kW and the bZ4X has been engineered with a heat pump for heating and AC for extra efficiency. In the US, the front-wheel-drive model is estimated to deliver 250 miles of range.

Toyota is already selling the electric SUV in Japan and will have it at dealers across the US from mid-2022.

Toyota introduced the bZ4X several months ago for domestic and global markets, but it’s only now we finally get to see the dedicated electric SUV for the United States. Arriving at dealers across the country in mid-2022, the sister model of the Subaru Solterra will be offered in North America with a choice between front- and all-wheel drive courtesy of a single- or dual-motor electric motors, respectively.

Bear in mind the quoted maximum range of 250 miles is estimated by the manufacturer and is only available for the bZ4X XLE FWD model. The driving range is obtained from a lithium-ion battery pack mounted flat under the floor to eliminate the hump found on cars with combustion engines and also to lower the vehicle’s center of gravity.

For the first time ever in a Toyota, the 2023 bZ4X comes with a front-seat radiant foot-and-leg heat. Additional good news for those living in cold climates is a heat pump for both heating and air-conditioning, along with a heated steering wheel and seats. Even if you’re living in a region where winters tend to be harsh, the Japanese marque says the battery will still have 90% of capacity even after 10 years of ownership.

Since we keep mentioning the battery – a 71.4-kWh pack for FWD models and a slightly larger 72.8-kWh pack for the AWD version – it can be charged to 80% within an hour provided you’re using a high-output charger. The battery’s housing with its frame and cross-bracing design was conceived in such a way as to withstand a collision from any possible angle.

The bZ4X is the first Toyota to benefit from the latest generation of the company’s Safety Sense package (TSS 3.0) with an improved detection range of the wave radar and monocular camera. The zero-emissions SUV boasts new features such as Daytime Motorcyclist Detection, Low-Light Cyclist Detection, and Guardrail Detection.

As a final note, the bZ4X is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of Toyota EVs as the company will have no fewer than 70 electrified models on sale by the middle of the decade, 15 of which are going to be dedicated electric vehicles. Of these 15, seven of them are going to carry the bZ (Beyond Zero) badging. The ultimate goal? Reaching carbon neutrality by 2050.

Following the unveiling of the concept in April, Toyota is now disclosing technical specifications for its bZ4X all-electric SUV co-developed with Subaru. It will be offered in both front- and all-wheel-drive configurations with a single- and dual-motor setup, respectively. The FWD model will be powered by a 150-kilowatt (201-hp) motor while the AWD version will use 80-kW motors at the front and rear for a combined output of 160 kW (215 hp).

In terms of performance, the Toyota bZ4X with a single motor will do 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 8.4 seconds whereas the dual-motor version is going to complete the sprint in 7.7 seconds. Naturally, the FWD model will be the lighter configuration, tipping the scales at 1,920 kilograms (4,233 pounds) compared to the AWD setup and its 2,005 kg (4,420 lbs) curb weight.

As far as the battery is concerned, the zero-emissions SUV boasts a lithium-ion pack with a capacity of 71.4 kWh, good for more than 280 miles (450 kilometers) in the WLTP cycle. Toyota has also released the range figures per WLTC, in which case the FWD model goes approximately 311 miles (500 kilometers) and the AWD model around 286 miles (460 kilometers). EPA’s rating is not available at the moment of writing, but expect the numbers to go down significantly.

When it comes to size, the Toyota bZ4X is 4,690 mm (184.6 inches) long, 1,860 mm (73 inches) wide, and 1,650 mm (65 inches) tall, with a wheelbase measuring 2,850 mm (112 inches). It’s built on a dedicated EV platform with a flat-floor layout and support for 150-kW charging, needing only half an hour to charge the battery at 80%. The AWD version uses a system developed by Subaru, which will sell its own version of the SUV, dubbed Solterra.

Toyota plans to have the BZ4X on sale from the middle of next year to kick-start the launch of seven bZ-badged pure electric vehicles. It will have support for over-the-air updates, voice recognition to control the air conditioning and wipers, along with a digital key by using the smartphone to lock and unlock the vehicle as well as do other procedures.
