The cutesy little bug was discontinued in July 2019, but it didn\u2019t take too long for rumors to emerge about a potential return. The German automotive conglomerate\u2019s head honcho Herbert Diess is now fueling reports about a return of the adorable city car.<\/p>\n<p>Asked on Chinese social media <em>Weibo<\/em> about the prospects of resurrecting the Beetle as an EV, the 63-year-old executive said: \u201cWe look forward to your suggestions.\u201d Diess went on to declare he is just as \u201cexcited about the launch of <a href=\"https:\/\/evglobe.com\/2022\/02\/03\/2023-volkswagen-id-buzz-arrives-london-without-front-trunk\/\">ID. Buzz<\/a> and, from this experience, learn how we can bring our traditional and emotional world to the electric vehicle industry, thinking about the Beetle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It could happen one day seeing as how the company is on the verge of reviving another icon, the Microbus, with the unveiling of the ID. Buzz. The purely electric van will finally break cover on March 9 before going on sale in Europe later this year. It\u2019s also coming to the United States where it will be available from 2023. A couple of passenger-oriented versions are planned, along with a cargo model.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15620\" src=\"https:\/\/evglobe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/VW-Beetle-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1795\" height=\"1166\" srcset=\"https:\/\/evglobe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/VW-Beetle-1.jpg 1795w, https:\/\/evglobe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/VW-Beetle-1-696x452.jpg 696w, https:\/\/evglobe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/VW-Beetle-1-1068x694.jpg 1068w, https:\/\/evglobe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/VW-Beetle-1-1536x998.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1795px) 100vw, 1795px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not the first time Diess hints about launching an electric variant as he told <em>Autocar<\/em> back in November 2017 an EV would be better than the modern Beetle. He specified it would stay true to the original model by featuring a rear-wheel-drive configuration. Such a model would ride on the MEB platform as the new <a href=\"https:\/\/evglobe.com\/2021\/09\/20\/vw-id1-gtx-details-rumor\/\">MEB-Small architecture<\/a> is being developed for FWD cars.<\/p>\n<p>Diess stated the possibility to bring back classic models is a luxury that startup companies cannot afford, thus indirectly taking a jab at the likes of <a href=\"https:\/\/evglobe.com\/2022\/02\/03\/tesla-ota-update-for-817143-cars-will-fix-seatbelt-chime-problem\/\">Tesla<\/a> and Rivian.
