However, most analysts and industry experts put the two automakers in the same category, including Experian. Case in point, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonews.com\/retail\/why-tesla-took-wide-lead-over-bmw-us-luxury-race-january\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Automotive News<\/em><\/a> cites data released by the consumer credit reporting company regarding January luxury car registrations in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Tesla registrations went up by a massive 49% compared to the same month of 2021, reaching 37,162 units. In the same interval, demand for BMWs grew by 8.2% to 30,563 units. Lexus took the last spot on the podium with 24,483 registrations or 6% less than in January 2021. Mercedes saw the biggest drop, with registrations declining by 20% to 22,022.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2400\" src=\"https:\/\/evglobe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/bmw-ix-tesla-model-y-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"696\" height=\"696\" srcset=\"https:\/\/evglobe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/bmw-ix-tesla-model-y-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/evglobe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/bmw-ix-tesla-model-y-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/evglobe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/bmw-ix-tesla-model-y-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/evglobe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/bmw-ix-tesla-model-y-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/evglobe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/bmw-ix-tesla-model-y-1536x1536.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/evglobe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/bmw-ix-tesla-model-y.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Tesla and BMW comparison is interesting considering it was an extremely close race last year. The German luxury marque ultimately won by delivering 347,453 cars in the United States. However, Tesla was right behind, with 342,412 units sold. 2022 isn\u2019t looking too good for BMW considering Elon Musk\u2019s company is opening a new plant in Texas and boosting output at its existing Freemont factory.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s worth noting the terms \u201csale\u201d and \u201cregistration\u201d are not interchangeable. Why is that the case? Because you can buy a car this month and register it in the next one. Since automakers release sales numbers, data providers such as Experian can only make estimations about registrations. It\u2019s even more difficult to accurately observe Tesla\u2019s performance since it doesn\u2019t publish info on a monthly basis. In addition, the EV manufacturer doesn\u2019t break out US sales numbers.<\/p>\n<p>As you might have heard, Tesla is expanding its European presence by opening a new plant in Germany. A few days ago, the company received the necessary stamp of approval to kick off series production of the <a href=\"https:\/\/evglobe.com\/2022\/01\/23\/tesla-model-y-deliveries-gigafactory-texas-start-late-q1\/\">Model Y crossover<\/a>.
