While all versions of the C-Class (codenamed W206) are going to be four-cylinder <a href=\"https:\/\/evglobe.com\/2021\/02\/10\/2022-mercedes-c-class-hybrid-only\/\">hybrids<\/a> \u2013 all the way up to the AMG C63 \u2013 a fully electric derivative is not on the agenda in the foreseeable future.<\/p>\n<p>That might come as somewhat of a surprise considering Mercedes has already announced plans to introduce the larger EQS and <a href=\"https:\/\/evglobe.com\/2021\/01\/26\/2023-mercedes-eqe-spy-video\/\">EQE<\/a> sedans later this year. As for the zero-emissions C-Class, the model\u2019s chief engineer Christian Fr\u00fch told <em>Automotive News Europe<\/em> the reasons why it\u2019s not an immediate priority.<\/p>\n<p>For starters, the newly developed Electric Vehicle Architecture (EVA) that will underpin the EQE and <a href=\"https:\/\/evglobe.com\/2021\/01\/23\/mercedes-eqs-test-track-video\/\">EQS<\/a> along with their SUV counterparts was engineered for cars bigger than the C-Class. In addition, EVA is tailored to more expensive models, meaning an electric C-Class using this platform would\u2019ve ended up too pricey for a luxury sedan in this class.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4478\" src=\"https:\/\/evglobe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/2022-Mercedes-C-Class-teaser-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" \/><\/p>\n<p>An alternative to using the EVA platform dedicated to high-end electric vehicles would be to adapt the Modular Rear Architecture (MRA) that underpins the next-generation C-Class. However, it\u2019s easier said than done as Christian Fr\u00fch revealed in the same interview with <em>ANE<\/em> these underpinnings can\u2019t be easily electrified in full. He goes on to explain Mercedes could have inserted the batteries within the existing floor, but that would\u2019ve meant raising the vehicle and installing bigger wheels.<\/p>\n<p>Going down this road would&#8217;ve required making sacrifices by compromising some of the packaging and rear axle configuration for the sake of eliminating the combustion engine. Not all hope is lost as Fr\u00fch revealed there will be a fully electric variant, just \u201cnot in the near future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the upcoming C-Class will be offered with a choice of mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains as all gasoline and diesel engines are going to be electrified.
