2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 new teaser images are hugely revealing

Hyundai has published three surprisingly revealing teaser images of the hotly anticipated Ioniq 5, its new electric vehicle based on the Concept 45. While the original photos have the brightness dialed down to conceal the exterior design, we’ve tweaked it to unlock more design details of what is shaping up to be an attractive car.

It’s pretty obvious from the teasers the Ioniq 5 won’t stray away too far from the Concept 45 before it, largely maintaining the boxy shape and angular pixel-inspired headlights. Even the aero-optimized alloy wheels in a generous 20-inch size are largely the same, and it appears the road-going model eschews traditional side mirrors in favor of cameras.

Hyundai tells us the Ioniq 5 is the company’s first production car to utilize a clamshell hood that expands over the entire width of the vehicle to minimize panel gaps as much as possible. Four teaser videos also uploaded this week on YouTube reveal additional design details, including the full-width taillights as seen on the concept car unveiled in September 2019. You can see all of them at the bottom of the article.

The Ioniq 5 is Hyundai’s first model to ride on the newly developed E-GMP platform developed specifically for electric vehicles. Technical specifications have not been disclosed, but a previous leak revealed an output of 308 horsepower (230 kilowatts) and 280 miles (450 kilometers) of WLTP-certified range. The cute EV is expected to hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 5.2 seconds and could offer a solar roof for additional efficiency.

The aforementioned range will be applicable for the Ioniq 5 equipped with a 58-kWh battery, but we’re hearing a bigger 73-kWh pack is also reportedly planned and will have enough juice for up to 342 miles (550 km) of range. Only five minutes of charging will be enough for more than 62 miles (100 km) of driving.

Hyundai’s all-new EV will be 4,640 mm (182.6 inches) long, 1,890 mm (74.4 inches) wide, 1,600 mm (63 inches) tall, and with a wheelbase measuring 3,000 mm (118.1 inches), meaning the front and rear overhangs will be extremely short.

The dual-motor, all-wheel-drive Hyundai Ioniq 5 is going to debut next month during an online-only event.
