Hyundai is providing a first glimpse into the cabin of its highly anticipated Ioniq 5 while announcing when the reveal will take place – February 23. In a week from tomorrow, we’re finally going to see the midsize electric SUV in full, complete with an avant-garde interior as previewed in the new teaser image released today.
The South Korean brand confirms the Ioniq 5 will have a completely flat floor as a result of riding on the newly developed E-GMP platform engineered exclusively for electric vehicles. Interestingly, the center console will slide back and forth to a greater extent compared to cars available today, which prompted a “fundamental rethink” of the center console, according to Hyundai. The company goes on to say it’s more than a static storage box as it will be offering greater functionality.
We also get to learn a little bit more about the seats, particularly the front ones as they’ll both have leg rests while the rear seats will slide back and for better legroom or cargo capacity. Emphasizing the interior’s eco-friendly leather, Hyundai mentions the upholstery is made from eco-processed leather treated with plant oil extractions from flaxseed.
In addition, some of the trim pieces consist of textiles originating from sustainable fibers, including wool and poly yarns, sugar cane bio components, plus material woven from fibers made from recycled PET plastic bottles. Some of the Ioniq 5’s interior surfaces – such as the dashboard, door panels, steering wheel, and switches – come coated in a polyurethane bio paint made from oils from rape flowers and corn.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic still having a negative impact in various parts of the world, Hyundai has decided to host the world premiere of the Ioniq 5 during a virtual event. The digital premiere will be followed by the market launch in the following months, initially in Europe, according to reports. The electric midsize crossover will then hit the domestic market in South Korea before arriving in North America towards the end of the year.
