Tesla Cybertruck production officially delayed to 2022

It was in late January this year when Tesla CEO Elon Musk admitted the company would have to get “lucky” to kick off deliveries of the Cybertruck before the end of the year. When it published the financial results for Q2 2021 last month, the Palo Alto-based EV manufacturer insisted production would start towards the end of the year. As it turns out, that’s no longer the case. Surprise, surprise.

Tesla has quietly updated the ordering page for the Cybertruck to reflect the start of production has been pushed back to 2022. Whether you select the Single Motor RWD, Dual Motor AWD, or the Tri Motor AWD version, all of them now say “production nears in 2022.” That’s still a bit vague since we don’t know which month Tesla is referring to, so it could be January in a best-case scenario or one of the final months of the year.

Interestingly, Elon Musk was quoted saying it would “literally cost one million dollars apiece” to manufacture the Cybertruck today. The statement was made during the previous last earnings call, citing the incapacity to build enough 4680 battery cells. As some of you will recall, the fully electric pickup has allegedly racked up more than one million reservations, although it remains to be seen how many will be converted to actual sales given the vehicle’s delay.

The fact Tesla has pushed back the release of the Cybetruck should not come as a big surprise seeing as how the company is notoriously known for not living up to its promises in regards to new model launches. The Model S Refresh was supposed to hit the market in February, but that didn’t happen until June. Not only that, but to our knowledge, the Model X Refresh still hasn’t reached customers, despite being unveiled at the beginning of the year together with the sedan.
