Tesla Model X Plaid now available only with six seats

There are now fewer options to configure the Model X Plaid in the United States where Tesla has eliminated the five- and seven-seat interior configurations. In other words, those eager to purchase the high-performance electric SUV are stuck for the time being with the six-seat layout. It’s going to set you back $126,490 before options, which include the 22-inch Turbine wheels for $5,500 along with either a cream or black and white cabin that will cost you an additional $2,000.

The six-seat Model X Plaid is listed on Tesla’s website for the US with Solid Black, Deep Blue Metallic, and Midnight Silver Metallic paint jobs available for an extra $1,500 while the striking Red Multi-Coat is $2,500. As for the much-debated Full Self-Driving Capability, that will add $10,000 to the final bill. Once the configuration is finished, you’ll be disappointed to find out the vehicle won’t be delivered until October 2022.

Even though Tesla introduced the Model X Refresh with the 1,020-horsepower Plaid version in early 2021, customer deliveries did not commence until late last month. Seeing as how the delivery time is so long, the backlog must be quite large, with the company needing about 10 months to fulfill all existing orders.

As a reminder, the Model X Plaid is touted as the quickest-accelerating production SUV on the market by hitting 60 mph from a standstill in just two and a half seconds and doing the quarter-mile in 9.9 seconds. The tri-motor vehicle equipped with torque vectoring rides as standard on 20-inch wheels and has a 333-mile range. Go for the larger set we mentioned earlier, and you won’t be able to cover more than 311 miles.

Should you want the Model X with five or seven seats, you’ll have to settle for the regular trim level. The standard five-seat configuration costs $104,990 and offers 351 miles of range, but won’t be delivered until May 2023. If you can’t want that much, the seven-seat layout costs an extra $3,500 and has a January 2023 estimated delivery. Because it’s slightly heavier due to the extra seats, the Model X with seven seats comes with a slightly lower range of 347 miles.

It’s not known why the Plaid is six-seat-only now, but the limited availability might stem from supplier constraints since the five- and seven-seat models have three seats in the middle row. Perhaps Tesla is having a hard time sourcing the necessary components for the two-seat middle row.
