2023 Mercedes-AMG S63 Plug-In Hybrid Spied In Traffic

The latest-generation Mercedes S-Class (W223) has been available for a while with a plug-in hybrid setup, but those in need of more oomph will have to wait for the AMG model. Yes, for the first time ever, the performance version of Daimler’s fullsize luxury sedan will be offered as a PHEV. It’s believed to go by the name of S63 E Performance by adopting the same suffix used by the GT 63 S E Performance.

An official release might be right around the corner considering the prototype seen here has barely any camouflage on its body. We can clearly see there’s an extra cap for the charging port located on the driver’s side rear fender while the one for the gasoline tank is on the other side. The quad exhaust flanking the rear diffuser clearly shows we are dealing with the AMG model.

Not only that, but Mercedes didn’t bother to camouflage the aggressive Panamericana front grille with its retro-flavored vertical slats on both sides of the large three-pointed star logo. The front bumper design shows enlarged air intakes to cool down the uprated V8 engine. As for the side profile, we’re getting the impression the prototype rides closer to the road than a normal S-Class, thus suggesting it had a stiffer suspension.

Behind those large alloy wheels finished in black are upgraded brakes to cope with the additional power delivered by the PHEV setup. Speaking of which, the 2023 Mercedes-AMG S63 E Performance is expected to combine a twin-turbo 4.0-liter gasoline engine with an electric motor. The two are rumored to deliver a total output of approximately 700 horsepower, but we’ve heard there might be an even more potent version in the works.

By utilizing a beefier electric motor, AMG might unlock 831 hp from the plug-in hybrid system to mirror the GT 63 S E Performance. Perhaps this is the reason Mercedes has trademarked the S73 moniker to use it for a range-topping version that would indirectly replace the defunct S65 and its mighty V12 engine. The latter is still available, but only for the Maybach S-Class.

The world premiere should take place in the coming weeks or months, with customer deliveries to commence in Europe during the second half of 2022.
