Having discontinued the Fiesta, Focus, and Fusion from its US lineup in recent years, Ford believes the new Maverick can be your next family car. It certainly has the efficiency credentials for that since the Hybrid version has an official EPA fuel economy rating of 42 miles per gallon in the city and 33 mpg on the highway, resulting in an impressive 37 mpg combined.

With customer deliveries already underway, early adopters are sharing their feedback on specialized forums after the first days of ownership. One such person took to the Maverick Truck Club to brag about how efficient the Maverick Hybrid is in the real world. He managed to cover a whopping 595.2 miles (957.8 kilometers) without having to refuel. Not only that, he says there was still a bit of gasoline left in the tank.

In other words, the electrified compact truck would’ve likely covered 600 miles (965 kilometers) at the very least. During his trip, 269.9 miles (434.3 kilometers) were done without sipping any gasoline as that distance was covered running solely on electric power. Overall, his small truck averaged 44.1 mpg, thus beating EPA’s estimation by a significant margin.

Yes, hitting the 600-mile mark might not be overly impressive for someone who drives a diesel-fueled car, but it’s a remarkable figure for such a truck. The only thing that could make the Maverick Hybrid even better would be the availability of an all-wheel-drive system since the electrified pickup comes exclusively with a front-wheel-drive layout. Should you want the power to be sent to both axles, you’ll have to step up to the turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine.

The hybrid is the base powertrain for the 2022 Maverick, combining a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter gasoline engine with a tiny 1.1-kWh lithium-ion battery pack mounted under the rear bench. You get 191 horsepower and 155 pound-feet (210 Newton-meters) of torque, enough hybrid punch for a maximum towing capacity of 2,000 pounds (907 kilograms). You can double that number by opting for the AWD-equipped EcoBoost version. However, that one returns only 25 mpg in the combined cycle or an extra mpg if you stick with FWD.

Fuel efficiency doesn’t usually spring to mind when the subject of a conversation is trucks. However, the 2022 Ford Maverick is no ordinary pickup as it comes as standard with a hybrid powertrain. When the compact utilitarian vehicle was unveiled earlier this year, the Blue Oval advertised an EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of 40 miles per gallon in the city.

As it turns out, the Maverick Hybrid is even more efficient than previously believed as it’s been officially rated at 42 mpg in the city. That’s mighty impressive for what still remains a veritable pickup truck, even though you (sadly) can’t have the hybrid powertrain with all-wheel drive. According to the EPA, the Hyundai Santa Cruz competitor returns 33 mpg on the highway, resulting in a fuel economy rating of 37 mpg in the combined cycle.

With the battery charged and the gasoline tank fully loaded, the 2022 Maverick with the hybrid setup can travel for more than 500 miles (805 km) before you have to refuel it. Best of all, the capabilities we usually associate with trucks combined with the efficiency of a small gasoline car come at a fair price, with Ford setting a starting price of just under $20,000.

For your money’s worth, you’ll be getting an electrified compact truck motivated by a naturally aspirated, four-cylinder 2.5-liter gasoline engine that runs on the Atkinson cycle and works together with an electric motor. The two deliver a combined output of 191 horsepower and 155 pound-feet of torque, enough for a payload of 1,500 pounds (680 kilograms).

While customer deliveries of the Maverick equipped with the optional gas-only EcoBoost engine started in September, you’ll have to wait until January next year to get behind the wheels of the hybrid model. Before that happens, dealers will have the more fuel-efficient truck on display from December 2021. Interestingly, Ford projects it will sell the entire production run for the 2022 model year by early next month, so better act fast if you want one.

Trucks are getting bigger and bigger with each passing generation, but Ford is now addressing this issue by introducing an entry-level pickup in the United States. Engineered to do battle with the Hyundai Santa Cruz, the new Maverick takes the role of a unibody compact utilitarian vehicle with four doors, five seats, and a 4.5-foot bed.

Interestingly, Ford will be selling the 2022 Maverick with a hybrid powertrain as standard, combining a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter gasoline engine of the Atkinson-cycle variety with an electric motor. Together, the two deliver a combined 191 horsepower and 155 pound-feet (210 Newton-meters) of torque channeled to the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

The Blue Oval is targeting an impressive EPA-estimated fuel economy of 40 miles per gallon in the city and 500 miles (805 kilometers) of range on a single tank of gas. Even with the standard hybrid powertrain, the Maverick is capable of towing up to 2,000 pounds, which Ford says is enough for a “good-sized” pop-up camper trailer or a personal watercraft. The payload capacity stands at 1,500 pounds.

All these assets come at an impressively low starting price of just $19,995 for the base XL trim level, with XLT and Lariat versions featuring more equipment also planned. Ford will sell the two more expensive flavors of the Maverick with an optional FX4 package provided the truck is equipped with all-wheel drive. The extra kit adds off-road upgrades including different suspension, all-terrain tires, additional underbody protection, and dedicated Mud/Rut and Sand driving modes complimented by Hill Descent Control.

Speaking of AWD, it can be had by ordering the compact truck with the beefier 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine, which delivers 250 horsepower and 277 pound-feet (376 Newton-meters) of torque via an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The turbocharged four-pot is also offered with a FWD layout, but you’ll want AWD and the optional 4K Tow Package to tow 4,000 pounds.

Ford will have the Maverick on sale this fall, but the configurator is already up and running on its website. Early adopters can get a fully loaded First Edition only during the truck’s first 12 months on sale. It’s based on the high-end Lariat trim and rides on 18-inch glossy black machined wheels on the hybrid model and 17-inch alloys on the EcoBoost version.

The special version can be painted in Area 51, Carbonized Gray, and a First Edition-exclusive Rapid Red shade. Regardless of choice, the Maverick First Edition has unique graphics on the lower doors and hood, combined with a glossy black roof, body-colored door handles, and a soft tonneau cover.

It was only a couple of weeks when Ford unveiled the F-150 Lightning and now we’re hearing the Blue Oval is on the verge of introducing another electrified truck. Much smaller and still equipped with a combustion engine, the compact Maverick pickup is reportedly going to debut in the first half of June. Ford Authority has heard from sources close to the matter the wraps will come off within the next two weeks and that there will be a hybrid powertrain in the mix.

Going up against another small pickup, the recently unveiled Hyundai Santa Cruz, the all-new Maverick will slot below the midsize Ranger in Ford’s truck lineup. It is believed the hybrid setup will be available right from the start and is going to offer an unspecified amount of pure electric range. It makes perfect sense to electrify the compact truck seeing as how the workhorse will be riding on the same platform that has underpinned the Escape crossover, which offers both hybrid and plug-in hybrid drivetrains.

The Escape Hybrid comes with a choice of either front- or all-wheel drive, with the latter making the most sense for the Maverick. Should the truck inherit the same electrified setup, expect a 2.5-liter gasoline engine to work with an electric motor and deliver a combined output of 198 horsepower. All versions of the pickup are going to be offered only in the more practical SuperCrew body style, much like Ford’s fullsize electric truck.

The partially electrified powertrain will be available alongside a 1.5-liter three-cylinder or a larger 2.0-liter four-cylinder, with both turbocharged engines belonging to the EcoBoost family and being hooked up to an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The entry-level model might feature a naturally aspirated four-pot engine, but nothing is official at this point. Going for a front-wheel-drive model means you’ll be stuck with a more basic twist-beam rear suspension whereas the AWD model will be equipped with a rear independent suspension.

Following its possible world premiere next month, the 2022 Maverick will enter production at the same Ford Hermosillo Assembly Plant in Mexico where the Bronco Sport and Escape are assembled. It should go on sale before the end of the year and carry a starting price of under $20,000, although we’ll have to wait and see about that since it sounds too good to be true.
