Unveiled with great fanfare earlier this week at the 2021 Los Angeles Auto Show, the SEVEN concept foretells a three-row electric SUV coming in 2024 with the Ioniq 7 name. Exactly how the showcar will morph into the production model? Two members of the company’s design team provided juicy details in an interview with Car and Driver.

Hyundai’s global chief of design, SangYup Lee, along with the head of the styling group, Simon Loasby, suggested the two will have a lot in common. They made the analogy between how the Concept 45 became the Ioniq 5, suggesting the SEVEN concept and Ioniq 7 will also be very much alike. For example, the pixel light motif will have a counterpart on the production model, and so will the general boxy shape of the vehicle.

The massive rear glass of the tailgate is unlikely to make it to the production model, and Hyundai said the same will hold true for the corporate badge sitting flush with the hood on the SEVEN concept. In addition, the showcar’s side cameras will be replaced by conventional mirrors, while underneath the front hood there will be a cargo area.

The South Korean marque went on to specify the cabin will go through significant changes since the concept’s lounge-like atmosphere was developed to highlight the SEVEN’s level 4 autonomous driving system. Needless to say, such a sophisticated setup won’t be ready in three years’ time since we haven’t even reached level 3 yet on a production vehicle.

That said, C&D has learned from the two high-ranked people from Hyundai’s design team that the concept’s oval cutouts in the door cards will be carried over to some extent on the Ioniq 7. While the automaker is keen on the idea of using the SEVEN’s wool upholstery on the final product, there are concerns buyers are not going to warm up to the idea of having wool inside their cars. The same goes for the bamboo silk carpets and bamboo wood trim, which are also unlikely to make it to production.

Hyundai is going big, quite literally. A new electric SUV is on the horizon to sit above the Ioniq 5. Arriving in 2024, the Ioniq 7 will likely be the largest vehicle to ride on the E-GMP dedicated electric platform. In the meantime, the SEVEN concept previews the production model these days at the 2021 Los Angeles Auto Show where it’s flaunting a futurist and minimalist design.

With a massive wheelbase of 3,200 millimeters (126 inches), it’s safe to assume the road-going vehicle will offer three rows of seats. However, the concept has a lounge-like cabin with just two seats and a corner sofa. The relaxing interior configuration was conceived to illustrate Hyundai’s vision of a fully autonomous car that does all the hard work while those sitting inside can just relax as if they’re in a living room.

As seen on the smaller Ioniq 5, the SEVEN adopts the Parametic Pixels theme for the lights, lending the spectacular concept an avant-garde look while making it stand out among all other electric SUVs. Emphasizing the idea of less is more, Hyundai has removed the door handles and side mirrors, but it goes without saying the production version will have them. In some markets where the laws allow it, we are expecting cameras as seen on the Ioniq 5.

Even though it’s fairly boxy, the South Korean brand says the SEVEN has an “aerodynamically pure silhouette” and proportions typical of a vehicle without a combustion engine. The suicide doors are a nice touch, but don’t hold your breath to see the Ioniq 7 without a traditional B-pillar. We could say the same thing about the OLED screen mounted onto the roof as part of the multimedia system as it’s unlikely to be found on the final version.

Hyundai remains tight-lipped about the technical specification as aside from revealing the size of that generous wheelbase, it only says the battery can last for more than 300 miles and can be charged at 350 kW. The state of charge goes from 10% to 80% in approximately 20 minutes. The range isn’t particularly impressive, but let’s keep in mind this will be a fullsize, three-row electric SUV, meaning it’s going to be heavy. It is especially true since the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive Ioniq 5 already tips the scales at around 2,100 kilograms (4,629 pounds).

Before coming out with this large-and-in-charge SUV, Hyundai will release the Ioniq 6 next year as a swoopy sedan riding on the same E-GMP platform.

The Hyundai Ioniq 7 won’t be coming out until 2024, but that hasn’t stopped the folks over at Gotcha Cars from imagining the large electric SUV that will be positioned above the Ioniq 5. They started out using an official press image of the latest Kia Telluride, which might seem a bit surprising, but Hyundai’s own vague teaser for the Ioniq 7 had a somewhat similar shape.

Expect a full-width LED light bar at the front along with intricate pixel-like lights in the same vein as we’ve already seen on the smaller Ioniq 5. Side cameras instead of conventional mirrors will likely be available, but let’s remember these are legal only in a handful of countries around the world as the legislation is progressing slowly.

Hyundai is likely to unveil a concept car next year or 2023 to preview the production model, much like the Concept 45 was a look int the Ioniq 5’s future and the Prophecy concept paves the way for next year’s Ioniq 6 sedan. The wheelbase should be even longer than that of the Ioniq 5, which already stretches at a stately 3,000 mm (118.1 in), meaning the Ioniq 7 is likely to come with a three-row layout.

The SUV increased dimensions over the Ioniq 5 will allow Hyundai’s engineers to fit a massive battery pack claimed to be as large as 100 kWh, good for a yet-to-be-confirmed WLTP range of 644 kilometers (400 miles). That might not be overly impressive by 2024 standards, but let’s keep in mind the Ioniq 7 will weigh well over two tons.

After the battery is depleted, expect owners of the large electric SUV to be able to recharge the pack at up to 350 kW, thus resulting in 62 miles (100 kilometers) of range in just five minutes of charging. The dual-motor setup will enable an all-wheel-drive layout and a rumored combined output that could easily exceed the 500-hp mark what with the Kia EV6 GT packing a mighty 577-hp punch.

When it comes to Hyundai’s electric portfolio, the Ioniq 5 has been getting most of the attention. Built on a bespoke EV platform to offer a cabin just as roomy as combustion-engined SUVs from a segment above, the zero-emissions midsize vehicle will be followed next year by the Ioniq 6 – an electric sedan preview by the Prologue concept. And after that? The Ioniq 7, due in early 2024.

The large electric SUV has already been teased by the South Korean brand, although official details are slim at this point. We do know it will ride on the same E-GMP platform as the other two Ioniq models, but there will be some major changes if we were to rely on a fresh report from Auto Express. The British magazine claims the three-row model’s wheelbase will surpass the already massive 3,000 mm (118.1 in) distance between the axles of the Ioniq 5.

The added footprint will enable Hyundai’s engineers to fit a larger battery pack, with the report speculating it could be a 100-kWh pack. That should be good for a maximum range between cycles of approximately 400 miles (644 kilometers) based on the WLTP cycle, which is quite impressive given the sheer size and weight of the Ioniq 7.

Interestingly, Auto Express goes on to say the big electric SUV could support wireless charging, although it remains to be seen whether the technology will be ready in only three years from now. If not, ultra-fast charging at 350 kW will be embedded, which should translate into 62 miles (100 kilometers) of range after just five minutes of charging.

Being a dedicated EV, it will have a completely flat floor design and Hyundai could cram in more tech to justify the premium it will command over the Ioniq 5. Over-the-air updates will make the Ioniq 7 better with time courtesy of software revisions, while a dual-motor AWD setup seems like an educated guess. This setup produces as much as 507 horsepower in the mechanically related Kia EV6 GT and should provide more than adequate performance in Hyundai’s big SUV.

Seeing as how the Ioniq 5 was previewed by the Concept 45 while the Ioniq 6 by the Prophecy concept, there is a pretty good chance Hyundai will also unveil a concept to serve as a window into the Ioniq 7’s concept. With the production model going on sale in 2024, the showcar could be unveiled as early as next year.
