Prior to its full reveal scheduled for January 7, the new MBUX Hyperscreen infotainment system is showing its ultra-wide display in a teaser video. The adjacent clip was published by Mercedes chief designer Gorden Wagener on his personal Instagram account to generate more buzz around the fancy display.

The first car to utilize the MBUX Hyperscreen will be the fully electric EQS large sedan arriving later in 2021. It will be offered as optional equipment, and by the looks of it, the giant display will extend onto the passenger-side dashboard. Little else is known about the XXL-sized screen, but Mercedes has said it will be curved and the system it will run on will benefit from artificial intelligence.

The implementation of AI in a car’s infotainment system “takes the operation and display of infotainment, comfort, and vehicle functions to a new level,” according to Mercedes. Whether it will be a single display or several screens side by side remains to be seen, but the EQS won’t be the first to go all-in on screens.

The Honda E also features a full-width digital dashboard made from no fewer than five screens, while the Porsche Taycan’s digital instrument cluster and touchscreen can be completed by an extra screen on the passenger side. By the looks of it, Mercedes has found a more cohesive way to integrate the generous screen real estate in the dashboard, although some would argue it’s still quite distracting.

Following its reveal tomorrow, the MBUX Hyperscreen will be one of the main stars of this year’s Consumer Electronics Shows. As a reminder, the 2021 CES is going to take place exclusively online in light of the coronavirus pandemic. The three-pointed star will showcase its sophisticated new screen at the digital-only CES on January 11.

As for the whole car, the EQS should arrive in the coming months and will be followed in 2022 by an EQS SUV, with smaller EQE sedan and SUV models also part of Mercedes’ EV onslaught.
