Is Audi testing the e-tron S On The Nurburgring?

Earlier this week, an interesting Audi prototype was spotted on the Nurburgring. Even though the video description mentions a Q7 e-tron, we’re inclined to believe that this is the Audi e-tron S which was introduced a few months ago. Of course, it’s not highly unusual for Audi to continue running and testing their prototypes.

“Audi is systematically moving forward with its e-offensive: The Audi e-tron and the Audi e-tron Sportback are becoming more agile, sharper and more dynamic as S models”, said Audi in a press release. “The three electric motors, two of which are located on the rear axle, together provide 370 kW of boost power and 973 Nm (717.6 lb-ft) of torque. This allows the two purely electrically driven models to accelerate to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in 4.5 seconds. The intelligent drive control raises vehicle safety, and dynamic handling in particular, to a new level: In addition to the electric all-wheel drive, there is the electric torque vectoring with active and fully variable torque distribution on the rear axle.”

The Audi e-tron Sportback will arrive in the U.S. in 2020, but the Ingolstadt-based automaker didn’t confirm the timing for the tri-motor “S” version of the electric vehicle.

From a design standpoint, the visual tweaks are very subtle. The e-tron SUV sits on 20-inch wheels as standard and can be optionally fitted with up to 22-inch alloys, while the fenders are 0.9 inches (23 millimeters) wider than before. In some markets, Audi will sell the two models with its optional cameras instead of side mirrors.

Audi’s third electric motor in the e-tron will also bring a top speed of 131 mph (210 km/h).

No range has been specified at the moment, but we should learn more in the next few months.
