Tesla will build its next US factory in Austin, Texas, CEO Elon Musk announced today. This is the culmination of a months-long search for a location to build the Cybertruck. During the quarterly earnings call, Musk said that construction work is “already underway.”
Just a few weeks ago, the State of Texas provided several tax breaks to attract the electric giant to Austin. Musk says that the new factory will be open to the public and that there will be a boardwalk and hiking and biking trails.
It will be the company’s fourth factory in the US, following the vehicle factory in California, battery factory in Nevada, and solar factory in New York. Tesla also has a new vehicle factory near Shanghai, China, and plans a new a factory outside Berlin, Germany.
But it’s not just the Cybertruck being built in Austin. Model 3 and Model Y will join the futuristic truck. Those units will allow for faster deliveries to the East Coast.
The factory will be in Travis County, near Austin, and will employ at least 5,000 people with a minimum wage of $15 per hour, according to the Associated Press. Tesla has said it will invest $1.1 billion.
During the call, Musk added that the company was “super impressed” by Tulsa, Oklahoma, which was also a top contender for Tesla’s new factory, and said that they will “strongly consider Tulsa for future expansions Tesla has down the road.”
