Genesis GV70 electric version quietly confirmed for 2022 launch

Genesis introduced the Electrified G80 sedan a few weeks ago as the first zero-emissions model from Hyundai’s luxury brand. The EV portfolio could grow very soon considering a recent report suggests the GV60 crossover will debut as early as June. Come 2022, the third purely electric vehicle from the South Korean premium marque will be launched.

The reveal comes from a presentation made by Hyundai for its investors in which it included a product roadmap of what both brands will introduce this year and in 2022. The Electrified G80 is on that list along with the CUV EV, which is how Genesis currently refers to its electric crossover based on the same E-GMP platform as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6.

The GV70 EV will likely follow the same naming scheme used by the Electrified G80, so we’re expecting the official nameplate to be Electrified GV70. Much like the sedan, it will be an electric conversion of the conventionally powered model rather than a vehicle developed from the ground up as an EV like it will be the case with the crossover twinned with the Ioniq 5.

Also planned for 2022 is the Ioniq 6, a pure electric sedan previewed by the Prophecy concept unveiled a little over a year ago. The Hyundai and Genesis brands will have more than 12 EVs on sale by the middle of the decade, including an Ioniq 7 scheduled to arrive in 2024 as a large SUV. Until then, the Mistra EV sedan is launching this year in China where Hyundai will unveil an electric crossover in 2022.

There are also plans for an all-electric minivan between now and 2022 when Hyundai will also launch larger EV models to cover the D and E segments. Factoring in the Kia brand, no fewer than 44 hybrid and electric vehicles will hit the market by 2025.
