VW ID.4 AWD Pro costs $43,675, cheapest electric AWD model in the US

What Europeans know as the Volkswagen ID.4 GTX is the ID.4 AWD Pro in the United States where it serves as the most affordable electric vehicle on sale with all-wheel drive. It kicks off at $43,675 (plus $1,195 destination charges) before incentives (of up to $7,500) and brings a dual-motor setup along with an 82-kWh battery pack with enough juice for 249 miles of range per an estimation made by EPA.

Step up to the ID.4 AWD Pro S and you’ll be paying $48,175 to get an extended list of standard equipment, including a panoramic glass fixed roof, an illuminated grille, and adaptive LED headlights. Inside the, fancier trim level comes with a 12-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system as well as a powered hands-free tailgate and 12-way power-adjustable front seats covered in leatherette. For an extra $1,500 it can be equipped with a Gradient package adding 20-inch wheels and a black roof with silver rails. Because it has more goodies and therefore is heavier, the S version is rated by EPA at a slightly lower 240 miles between charges.

This all-wheel-drive version of the ID.4 is quite similar to Europe’s recently unveiled GTX version (pictured above). It benefits from a combined output of 295 horsepower and covers the sprint to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds for the AWD Pro model. It primarily works in rear-wheel-drive mode as the electric motor at the front only kicks in when it’s needed. It is automatically activated within a few hundredths of a second whenever the onboard sensors detect wheelspin at any corner.

Drivers can activate a dedicated Traction mode which forces AWD and works at speeds of up to 12 mph for driving on slippery or loose surfaces. Other driving modes include Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Custom, with the latter allowing the user to blend characteristics of the Comfort and Sport modes. While the rear-wheel-drive ID.4 with its single motor can tow up to 2,200 pounds, the dual-motor version has a towing capacity of 2,700 pounds provided you’re using a braked trailer.

Volkswagen will have the all-paw ID.4 at dealers in the United States during the fourth quarter of 2021, but you can already preorder one today.
