Tesla delivered 201,250 cars in Q2 2021, setting new sales record

It’s a good day to be a Tesla stockholder because the Palo Alto electric car manufacturer has established a new sales record. For the first time ever, it managed to deliver more than 200,000 vehicles in a single quarter. In Q2 2021, precisely 201,250 sedans and SUVs were shipped to their rightful owners. During the same interval, Tesla assembled a total of 206,421 cars.

Needless to say, the bulk of the deliveries consisted of Model 3 and Model Y, with the two racking up 199,360 sold units whereas the more expensive Model S was delivered to 1,890 customers. Shipments of the Model X have not started yet and won’t kick off until October. In the succinct press release published by Tesla today, the company comments: “In the second quarter, we produced and delivered over 200,000 vehicles. Our teams have done an outstanding job navigating through global supply chain and logistics challenges.”

Most of the cars manufactured in Q2 2021 were the Model 3 and Model Y with a total production run of 204,081. It’s not all sunshine and rainbows as lots of people are patiently waiting for the Cybertruck and the second-generation Roadster. These two models have been pushed back to 2022 in a best-case scenario, and we mustn’t forget Tesla is also preparing the Semi. At the same time, reports are intensifying about a new entry-level EV to slot under the Model 3 and go after the Volkswagen ID.3.

Production Deliveries Subject to operating lease accounting
Model S/X 2,340 1,890 18%
Model 3/Y 204,081 199,360 7%
Total 206,421 201,250 7%

If the rumor mill is accurate, the cheapest Tesla will go on sale in 2023 at an unconfirmed starting price of approximately $25,000 in the United States. It’s supposedly going to be called the Model 2 and will have a range between cycles comparable to bigger and more expensive EVs. The new base EV is reportedly coming to Europe as well by manufacturing the car at the company’s plant in Berlin. Much like some of its models, the start of operations at the German factory has been delayed as well, with the target now being early 2022.
