The Trinity sedan wasn’t the only new electric vehicle teased today by the Volkswagen Group during the presentation of its EV-centric New Auto strategy. Luxury brand Audi also provided a taste of things to come regarding its own flagship electric car, which is currently known by its Artemis codename. A virtual 360-degree tour of the swoopy EV gives us an idea of what to expect from Ingolstadt’s electric range topper.
Many will be delighted to see the upcoming Artemis won’t be an SUV. It’s not going to take the shape of a sedan either as the silhouette makes us think of a large liftback, possibly billed as a grand tourer. It clearly adopts a hatchback layout rather than a traditional trunk lid, which is the same we could say about VW’s Trinity.
VW Group CEO Herbert Diess described Artemis as a “high-tech project, highly efficient sophisticated electric car” equipped with a level 4 autonomous driving system, which is also coming to the VW Trinity. The design bears a striking resemblance to the recently teased Grand Sphere, although the latter seems larger.
Other details about Artemis are scarce at the moment but it will be one of the many new Audi EVs coming in the following years ahead of 2033 when combustion-engined cars will be discontinued. The Four Rings will launch the final ICE-powered car in 2026 before retiring from production all gasoline and diesel vehicles seven years later.
Meanwhile, it is believed Artemis will morph into an A9 E-Tron as early as 2024 and serve as a technological tour de force for the whole VW Group. It’s said to be just as large as today’s A7 Sportback but with the internal space of the flagship A8. The overall styling is said to derive from the 2017 Aicon concept, which seems plausible after seeing these new sketches.
