Maybach EQS SUV concept likely debuting in September at IAA Munich

It was only last week when Mercedes announced through a teaser image that there will be a high-end Maybach version of the EQS SUV and now the very same preview photo is making the headlines again. Why? Because Daimler design chief Gorden Wagener shared it on his personal Instagram account where he disclosed a juicy tidbit: “More to come at IAA Mobility in Munich in early September 2021. Stay tuned!”

Reading between the lines, it can only mean the Maybach EQS SUV will premiere in a little over a month from now at the show in Germany. However, it’s worth noting we’re likely dealing with a concept rather than a production vehicle since the EQS SUV won’t be officially revealed until 2022. Nevertheless, we have reasons to believe the IAA-bound concept will be quite close to the road-going model.

Based on the same dedicated EV platform that has underpinned the EQS sedan, the SUV sibling will offer greater practicality at the expense of performance and range since logic tells us it will be heavier. Some would argue Mercedes should’ve launched the SUV version first given how luxury crossovers and SUVs are all the rage these days, but the three-pointed star decided to prioritize the sedan instead.

Expect the high-riding counterpart to be a technological tour de force much like the three-box saloon, featuring an advanced rear-wheel steering system and the avant-garde Hyperscreen interior with massive screen real estate. It will have a massive wheelbase after shaving off the overhangs as much as possible, which is something that can only be done on vehicles developed from day one as pure EVs. That should give it more space inside than the conventionally powered GLS fullsize luxury SUV.

After the EQA, EQB, and the EQS sedan, Mercedes’ electric assault will continue in September with the EQE sedan joining this Maybach EQS SUV at IAA Munich. Come 2022, the smaller zero-emissions sedan will be joined by an EQE SUV, with the G-Class sans a combustion engine to follow in 2024.
