2023 Mercedes EQS SUV spied with less camouflage than ever before

The dawn of the electric era is upon us, and Mercedes is one of the promoters of zero-emissions mobility. Following the launch of electric crossovers like the EQA, EQB, and EQC, the three-pointed star is getting ready to upsize its recipe with the EQS SUV – a fullsize luxury vehicle to serve as a high-riding equivalent of the EQS sedan.

We will get our first official taste at the flagship electric SUV from Mercedes next month when the Maybach ultra-premium division will unveil a near-production concept prior to a 2022 reveal of the road-going model. Meanwhile, this prototype gives us a good idea of what to expect from the EQS SUV as it only has a thin strip of camouflage on its stately body.

It appears to feature a massive tailgate that should boost practicality by making it far easier to load and unload cargo from the trunk. Electronic pop-out door handles as seen in the sedan version are noticeable, along with a more generous ground clearance you would expect from an SUV. The black tape at the front reveals the prototype had a blocked-off grille to mirror other EQ models that don’t need a conventional radiator grille to cool down a combustion engine.

Peeking through the sleek camouflage are the headlights and taillights, which appear to have a design echoing that of the regular EQS. Due to its taller body and bulky rear end, the EQS SUV is not going to be as attractive as the sedan, but it should be more spacious thanks to greater headroom and potentially a bigger cargo compartment.

Switching from a sedan to an SUV body style does come with some disadvantages as we’re fairly certain the EQS SUV will put on some weight and that will consequently have a negative impact on efficiency and performance. Nevertheless, it should still be right up there with the Tesla Model X and Audi E-Tron in terms of refinement, features, and luxury amenities.

Mercedes has previously announced the EQS SUV will be joined next year by a smaller EQE SUV, and in 2024, a fully electric G-Class will follow.
