Porsche electric concept car teased for 2021 IAA Munich debut

Which Porsche EV comes after the Taycan / Taycan Cross Turismo and the yet-to-be-released Macan EV? The Zuffenhausen brand could answer this question on September 6 when it will unveil a zero-emissions concept car at IAA Munich in Germany. The company sadly doesn’t go into details about what it will reveal, only saying the study will boast “cutting edge technology combined with breath-taking design.”

That’s not really saying much, although an Instagram post mentions something about how “motorsports have been the toughest testing grounds for engineering innovations on their way to series production.” It could be a sign Porsche”s forthcoming EV will be related to the exciting world of racing, although we’ll have to wait and see about that.

For what it’s worth, we are inclined to believe this is electric judging by the familiar headlight design reminiscent of the Taycan and the Mission E concept. The front section appears to have a small frunk since there doesn’t seem to be enough room under the hood for a combustion engine. If it’s indeed an EV, we are fairly certain it’s not based on the 911 since Porsche has made it clear a fully electric version of its iconic sports car won’t arrive this decade.

It’s fairly safe to rule out a Macan EV concept since prototypes of the all-electric crossover have been spotted featuring different headlights. The red concept car teased here also doesn’t seem to be related to the Audi A6 E-Tron as Ingolstadt’s concept unveiled earlier this year had a longer front section.

Perhaps the IAA-bound electric concept will be an early preview of the next-generation 718 Boxster and Cayman as the sports car duo is all set to embrace an all-electric future. Maybe the motorsport nod mentioned by Porsche is about a rally-spec 718 EV, but it’s too early to know for sure.
