Mercedes-AMG plug-in hybrid teased ahead of September 1 debut

We usually associate PHEVs with cars primarily built with fuel efficiency in mind, but for AMG, a plug-in hybrid is first about performance and then about lowering fuel consumption. Case in point, the upcoming electrified version of the GT 4-Door Coupe will combine a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine with an electric motor for a total output slated to exceed 800 horsepower.

A teaser image announces the world premiere is scheduled to take place on September 1 ahead of the public debut bound to take place a few days later at the IAA Munich show in Germany. Believed to be called the AMG GT 63 E Performance, the new go-faster PHEV will be Mercedes-AMG’s belated answer to the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid, another luxury grand tourer with a plug-in hybrid system.

You’re looking at an electrified performance machine expected to cost somewhere in the region of $200,000, making it one of the most expensive new Mercedes/AMG models ever. It’s essentially an AMG GT 63 S with an electric motor mounted at the back where there’s also going to be a limited-slip differential and a two-speed transmission.

Mercedes’ performance division has previously said the electric motor will offer a continuous power rating of 70 kilowatts (94 hp) and a peak output of 150 kW (201 hp), available for just 10 seconds. The e-motor’s 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) torque is going to be delivered instantly while a battery pack with a capacity of 6.1 kWh and weighing 196 lbs (89 kg) will provide the necessary energy.

AMG’s first plug-in hybrid with four doors has already been confirmed to complete the 0 to 60 mph task in under three seconds, thus making it just as quick as hypercars from not that long ago. It will be joined at IAA Munich by the AMG EQS – the first fully electric performance model from Mercedes’ sub-brand after the short-lived AMG SLS Electric Drive.

Also at the show in Germany, we’ll get to see the production-ready EQE electric sedan and a concept for the Maybach EQS SUV.
