Ford Mustang Mach-E 1400 pushed hard in stunning Faroe Islands

The Ford Mustang Mach-E GT is currently the sportiest iteration of the electric SUV you can buy, but the Blue Oval has already engineered a far more extreme version. Only a prototype, the Mustang Mach-E 1400 gets its name from the massive power delivered by no fewer than seven electric motors. Yes, seven. It boasts 1,400 horsepower, and as Vaughn Gittin Jr discovered, the zero-emissions SUV with a pony car name is an absolute joy to drive and hoon.

In an excellent 12-minute video released by Ford Performance, the professional drifter not only gets to have fun with the one-off Mustang Mach-E, but also discover the wonderful scenery provided by the Faroe Islands. The one-off prototype developed in collaboration with RTR takes the abuse effortlessly while Vaughn Gittin Jr tests the limits of the high-performance electric SUV.

As a refresher, the “1400” version was developed over the course of 10,000 hours to show electric vehicles can be truly exciting, even when they take the shape of an SUV. With five extra electric motors than the range-topping GT road version and a 56.8-kWh battery with nickel manganese cobalt pouch cells, this is far from being an ordinary Mustang Mach-E.

It seems highly unlikely a production version will arrive anytime soon given the complexity of the powertrain and how much this wild derivative would end up costing. Nevertheless, it’s exciting to see what engineers can do when they have complete freedom to build such a bonkers EV. Instead of a bulky SUV, we’re already imagining a smaller, lightweight sports car that would likely go on to break all track records.

Meanwhile, the road-going Mustang Mach-E was recently updated for the 2022 model year by getting a battery upgrade with an increased usable capacity. The smaller pack was uprated from 68 kWh to 70 kWh while the larger one now has 91 kWh instead of the previous 88 kWh. In both cases, that should translate into slightly more range.
