Tesla Model Y Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive officially canceled in the US

If you had been hoping to get behind the wheel of a Tesla Model Y at a more reasonable price tag, we’ve got some bad news to share. The base Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive configuration won’t be going into production after all as those who managed to reserve one have been announced this version has been effectively canceled.

Rumors about the vehicle’s termination originally emerged back in February, and now it’s official. Reservation holders have been announced that their “current configuration is no longer available. Update your order in your Tesla Account.” There is one aspect the company has yet to address as those who preordered the vehicle got the Full Self-Driving system for $7,000.

However, the price has since gone up to $10,000. A question arises – Will someone with a Model Y LR RWD reservation have to pony up the extra $3,000 should they decide to buy a different model?

The fact Tesla has decided to take such a measure shouldn’t come as a shock seeing as how the Standard Range Rear-Wheel Drive suffered from the same fate in February. That said, the EV automaker still makes this specification in China at the Shanghai factory and sells the model in the People’s Republic.

Speaking of production, the Model Y is assembled at the Fremont factory from where it’s shipped globally. The zero-emissions crossover will also be made from 2022 at the Berlin plant in Germany as well as at Gigafactory Texas.

A hypothetical return of the rear-wheel-drive Model Y would be greatly appreciated considering Tesla has been increasing the electric SUV’s starting price in the last few months. The cheapest spec money can buy is the Long Range at $58,990, while the Performance retails from $63,990. Both have dual motors, all-wheel drive, and over 300 miles of range.

You need to arm yourself with a lot of patience to get the Long Range since it has an estimated delivery time of July 2022. Those who are willing to upgrade to the Performance will get the vehicle sooner as the company’s website says customer deliveries start in February if you order today.
