2024 GMC Electric Sierra Denali teased for the first time

After the Hummer EV pickup truck and SUV, GMC is preparing to unveil its third purely electric vehicle. Taking the shape of the Sierra fullsize truck, the new zero-emissions machine will be available exclusively in the posh Denali trim and will be built alongside the two Hummer models at General Motors’ Factory Zero in Detroit and Hamtramck, Michigan.

While it’s too early to talk about pricing, it goes without saying it will be a lot more affordable than the Hummer since the latter is a fancier lifestyle truck whereas the Sierra Denali will be more towards the utilitarian side. The first official preview shows an imposing front fascia with massive L-shaped LED lights complemented by an illuminated GMC logo as well as a light-up frame for the grille. In addition, there are three sequential lights to mirror the Hummer.

This teaser has been a long time coming considering we first heard plans about an electric Sierra a year ago from Lynn Thompson, president of Thompson Buick GMC Cadillac in Springfield, Missouri. Logic tells us it will be mechanically related to the Silverado EV premiering on January 5, 2022, at CES in Las Vegas. The GMC will debut later, ahead of entering production in 2023 as a 2024MY product.

The two electric trucks will be built on GM’s Ultium platform and will go up against the Rivian R1T and the F-150 Lightning for which Ford has already registered 200,000 reservations. The Silverado is believed to hit the assembly line in early 2023, so it will be the first to go on sale of the two upcoming EV pickups. Expect rear-wheel steering and a large glass roof from the GMC Electric Sierra Denali as it will be more upscale than its Silverado cousin.

When it does eventually debut in full, the Sierra without a combustion engine should offer at least 400 miles of range. For the time being, we only know it will come along with “premium materials and capability customers have come to expect from GMC trucks.”
