When Jeep introduced the latest generation of the Wrangler for the European market, the iconic off-roader was presented with a choice between gasoline and diesel engines. Then the plug-in hybrid model arrived, and going forward, the PHEV will be the only powertrain available. In other words, the 2022 Wrangler on the Old Continent comes exclusively as a 4xe model.

Why is it happening? Because of stricter emissions regulations, of course. By axing the conventionally powered Wrangler, it consequently means customers will not be able to order the competent SUV with only two doors since the 4xe is available only in the more practical four-door body style. It’s not all bad news as the model year change comes with additional tech and safety kit.

It gets automatic high beam headlamp control as well as adaptive cruise control with stop functionality, not to mention full-speed forward collision warning with braking – all offered as standard equipment. These join the previously available front and rear parking sensors, rearview camera, and a blind spot system. The tougher Gorilla Glass windshield is now available as standard on the Rubicon trim and optional on Sahara, while Silver Zynith Metallic Clear Coat and High Velocity Metallic Clear Coat exterior paints are added to the color palette.

The 2022 Wrangler 4xe arrives on Euro land with a new Sunrider Flip Top, an open-air option encompassing a fabric roof over the driver and front passenger. The rest of the roof consists of a hardtop, combined with the black twill fabric that you will find in other conventional vehicles featuring a folding roof. Jeep will sell this option as a ready-to-install top thanks to the factory-fitted mounting rails and the necessary hardware.

The powertrain stays the same as the 2.0-liter gasoline engine works with two electric motors and an eight-speed automatic transmission. The plug-in hybrid setup offers a generous 380 horsepower and an ample 637 Newton-meters of torque, enabling the Wrangler 4xe sprint to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 6.4 seconds. With the battery fully charged, it will cover more than 50 kilometers (31 miles) without sipping any gasoline.

Jeep is already taking orders for its electrified SUV in select European countries, including Spain, Belgium, Italy, and Serbia. More markets will be added before the end of the year.

Much like Tesla has been doing in recent months by increasing the prices of its EVs, Jeep is once again asking more money for its Wrangler 4xe. The plug-in hybrid SUV has already received a couple of price bumps, and it appears the 2022 model year will cost even more money. Cars Direct has managed to get a hold of Jeep’s order guide for the 2022MY and they’ve discovered yet another price hike.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara 4xe is going to cost from $54,125 including destination fees whereas the better equipped Rubicon trim level will set you back $57,825. In other words, both versions of the electrified off-roader are going to be $1,005 more expensive than before, which is a tough pill to swallow if you’ve been saving for the SUV equipped with a PHEV setup.

It’s especially true if you compare 2022MY prices with the Wrangler 4xe’s original sticker as prices have gone up by approximately 9 percent in only a year or so. Despite several price increases, the plug-in hybrid SUV is in great demand as the 2021MY is technically sold out. Your only chance to get behind the wheel of one is by buying one of the vehicles dealers have ordered, so those who want to spec the SUV will have to patiently wait for the 2022MY.

Although in some cases price increases are reflected in more standard equipment, that sadly doesn’t seem to be the case here. Cars Direct reports there are no changes in terms of what you get with the 2022 Wrangler 4xe compared to the previous model year. The silver lining here is the electrified off-roader qualifies for the federal tax credit of up to $7,500, thus resulting in a more attractive deal.

Those interested in leasing should know that going down this route will make the 4xe variant more affordable to lease than the conventional Wrangler powered solely by a gasoline engine.

Back in July, Jeep CEO Chrstian Meunier was happy to report that the Wrangler 4xe was sold out for the entire 2021 model year. The electrified off-roader is indeed one of the quickest-selling hybrids available in North America, but you can still get behind the wheel of a new one despite the head honcho’s statement made months ago.

How is that possible? Jeep North America President Jim Morrison told Muscle Cars and Trucks there are enough dealer orders expected to last until the end of the year. In other words, while it might not be possible to order a new Wrangler 4xe today, Jeep dealers should have plenty of inventory for customers to pick from.

As Morrison explains in the interview: “We have enough Wrangler 4xe dealer orders to get us through the end of the year. We are still within that prioritizing of our customer orders. So if a customer comes in and gets a sold order, we’ll still put them in at the head of the line.”

While Europe also gets a Renegade 4xe and a Compass 4xe, Jeep USA is only selling the Wrangler 4xe, with a Grand Cherokee 4xe on the way. The reputable off-roader is available strictly in the four-door Unlimited body style and three trim levels: $51,225 Sahara, $54,925 Rubicon, and the $57,045 Altitude, with all three prices excluding the $1,595 destination charges and the federal tax credit of up to $7,500.

It is widely believed the Gladiator, essentially a Wrangler pickup truck, will also receive the 4xe treatment with the same PHEV setup. It should combine the turbocharged 2.0-liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine with dual electric motors, a 17-kWh lithium-ion battery, and an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The Wrangler 4xe offers a substantial 375 horsepower and 637 Newton-meters (470 pound-feet) and can cover up to 21 miles (34 kilometers) without sipping any gasoline. Chances are the Gladiator 4xe could have a shorter EV range since it’s going to be significantly heavier than the SUV version, but that remains to be seen.

You will have to dig a little bit deeper in your pockets to get behind the wheel of a Jeep Wrangler 4xe as the best-selling plug-in hybrid vehicle in the United States is now a little bit more expensive. A recent dealer order guide discovered by Cars Direct shows the electrified off-roader has been subjected to a fairly substantial price hike for the second time in 2021.

In the Sahara trim level, the four-door-only Wrangler 4xe will now set you back $52,520 MSRP with destination while the range-topping Rubicon retails for $56,220. That makes the PHEV version $1,220 more expensive than before and it follows a price bump from earlier this year. As a refresher, the vehicle originally carried a starting price of $49,490. In other words, it’s now a rather substantial $3,030 pricier than before. Jeep spokesperson Ron Kiino confirmed the latest price bump in an e-mail sent to Cars Direct.

The silver lining is the asking price does not take into account the federal tax credit of $7,500 and any discounts the dealer might offer. The Wrangler 4xe is in high demand taking into consideration Jeep is happy to report the entire production run allocated for 2021 has been sold out. That can only mean placing an order today will result in a vehicle delivered most likely in early 2022, so new customers are in for a long wait.

The Jeep Wrangler 4xe will soon be following by an equivalent Gladiator plug-in hybrid serving as an electrified pickup truck. It should use the same turbocharged 2.0-liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine working together with a pair of electric motors, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and a 17-kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

The PHEV arrangement is good for 375 horsepower and 637 Newton-meters (470 pound-feet) of torque while the battery has enough juice for 21 miles (34 kilometers). Bear in mind the Gladiator 4xe won’t match the efficiency of the Wrangler 4xe considering it’s substantially heavier. We should have all the details in the coming months as the truck could debut before the end of 2021.

Facing risks of having to pay hefty fines for exceeding the CO2 fleet levels, Stellantis is making a radical change to the Jeep Wrangler lineup in Europe. From 2022, only the plug-in hybrid “4xe” model will be available on the Old Continent, and that means the two-door version of the reputable off-roader will soon be gone.

The less practical of the two body styles is not offered with a PHEV setup because the two-door Wrangler is simply too short to accommodate the extra hardware commanded by the plug-in hybrid system. With Jeep having no other way but to go 4xe-only for the Euro-spec model, it can only mean the two-door SUV is being phased out. It’s already happening in some markets where customers have to step up to the four-door-only 4xe model.

As a sole exception, the United Kingdom won’t be impacted by this decision as Jeep will continue to sell there a gasoline-only Wrangler. The rest of the Euro markets will be getting the plug-in hybrid with a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine combined with two electric motors. The PHEV setup is good for 380 horsepower and 637 Newton-meters (470 pound-feet) of torque, while the battery has enough juice for more than 50 kilometers based on the WLTP cycle.

The Jeep Wrangler 4xe is quite zippy for a fully fledged off-roader, needing only 6.4 seconds to complete the sprint to 62 mph (100 km/h). It went on sale this month in Europe in Sahara, Rubicon and 80th Anniversary trim levels, complete with “Electric Blue” exterior design cues and impressive fuel consumption in hybrid mode of just 3.5 liters / 100 km. Jeep has done the math and says the plug-in hybrid powertrain cuts CO2 emissions by nearly 70% compared to the gasoline-only Wrangler.

If you’re wondering about the popularity of the Wrangler in Europe seeing as how it’s mainly a US-focused product, JATO Dynamics says Jeep sold 2,602 units through May. Of those, only 30 percent were the two-door version, so its imminent demise should not be a deal-breaker.

The Wrangler is finally facing some stiff competition now that Ford is getting ready to start customer deliveries of the Bronco. Jeep’s reputable off-roader still has the edge over the Blue Oval newcomer when it comes to electrification by offering a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Unveiled at the beginning of September, the first-ever electrified Wrangler 4xe finally has a price tag in the United States.

Math starts at $47,995 for the Wrangler Sahara 4xe and then you add the mandatory destination charges of $1,495, so you end up with $49,490. The starting price is before any incentives applicable to PHEVs, which will make the Wrangler 4xe more attainable. Mind you, the price tag refers to the Launch Edition, with the regular 4xe to arrive later on.

Jeep is also announcing pricing for the off-road-oriented Wrangler Rubicon 4xe Launch Edition. It starts off at $53,190 after destination and before the $7,500 tax credits. It comes as standard with the 4:1 Rock-Trac Heavy-Duty Full-Time 4WD System, along with the nine-speaker Alpine sound system and LED lights offered for the Sahara as well. Both are also fitted with an 8.4-inch Uconnect infotainment system as standard.

The 4xe models share a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine, two electric motors, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and a 17-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The electrified Wrangler produces a combined output of 375 horsepower (280 kilowatts) and 470 pound-feet (637 Newton-meters) of torque and offers 25 miles (40 kilometers) of pure electric range.

Performance is not too shabby either, with Jeep saying the Wrangler 4xe takes only six seconds to complete the 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) sprint. Beyond the zero-emissions range, efficiency when running as a hybrid is quite impressive seeing as how Jeep estimates it will return 50 miles per gallon equivalent. It’s worth pointing out the PHEV model is the torquiest Wrangler of them all, eclipsing even the 442 lb-ft (600 Nm) of the EcoDiesel while matching the beefier V8-powered Rubicon 392.

Jeep will start customer deliveries of the Wrangler 4xe in the first quarter of next year.
