Better late than never, Nissan is finally electrifying the Juke by giving the funky-looking crossover a hybrid version in Europe. There’s both good and bad news to share as although efficiency is up, practicality has taken a hit due to the added hardware. Beginning with the positive sides, the subcompact model is always electric-only when you start it. In addition, the combustion engine won’t kick in while the car is in first gear.

The 2023 Juke Hybrid combines a 1.6-liter gasoline engine with an electric motor. The former produces 94 horsepower (69 kilowatts) and 148 Newton-meters (109 pound-feet) of torque while the latter is good for 49 hp (36 kW) and 205 Nm (151 lb-ft). Nissan’s alliance partner Renault supplied not only the inverter, but also the 15-kW starter/generator and the water-cooled battery pack with a capacity of 1.2 kWh.

The French automaker with the diamond logo also lent Nissan its “highly innovative” gearbox featuring dog clutches to replace traditional synchronizer rings. The multi-modal transmission has four ICE and two EV gears while lacking a clutch for less friction. The gearbox is smart enough to control battery regeneration and make the optimal shift points to help the hybrid setup deliver an extra 25% of power compared to the gasoline-only Juke.

According to Nissan’s own estimations, the typical owner will be driving the Juke Hybrid around town on electric power for up to 80% of the time. The crossover can reach speeds as high as 34 mph (55 km/h) without sipping any gasoline. In usual operation, the hybrid system always prioritizes the EV mode for maximum efficiency.

Mirroring the purely electric Leaf hatchback, the crossover offers one-pedal operation for greater comfort and better energy recuperation during braking. Discreet styling changes have been made to boost aero, including a reshaped rear spoiler. The fresh two-tone 17-inch and 19-inch wheels set it apart from the ICE-only Juke, with the bigger set derived from the alloys first seen on the Ariya electric crossover. The mildly updated corporate badge has also been installed.

As for the bad news, the Juke Hybrid loses 68 liters of cargo volume compared to its conventionally powered sibling. The trunk capacity behind the rear seats is down to 354 liters after adding the battery pack. For those in need of more space, folding the rear bench increases volume to 1,237 liters, which Nissan claims is still a best-in-class figure. Also worth pointing out rear legroom has remained unchanged, at 553 mm.

Going on sale later this year in Europe, the Nissan Juke Hybrid should cost roughly the same as the Renault Captur E-Tech Hybrid.

Even though Nissan introduced the second-generation Juke about two years ago, the subcompact crossover is still not available with a hybrid powertrain. The initial plan was to launch an electrified option at the beginning of the year, but obviously, that didn’t happen, with the Japanese marque pushing back the launch of a more efficient derivative until the end of 2021.

We’re now hearing that won’t happen either as French magazine L’Argus has it on good authority a hybrid Juke is not scheduled to come out until the middle of next year. The cause of this third delay is not known, and it’s a bit puzzling what is taking Nissan so long taking into account the hybrid powertrain has already been installed in the Renault Captur E-Tech.

The technology was developed by the Renault-Nissan alliance and the aforementioned Captur E-Tech has had the plug-in hybrid setup for quite a while now. In the French small crossover, the PHEV system consists of a naturally aspirated 1.6-liter gasoline engine working together with a pair of electric motors for a combined output of 158 horsepower and 257 pound-feet (nearly 350 Newton-meters) of torque. The electrified hardware is good enough to propel the B-segment crossover to 62 mph (100 km/h) from a standstill in 10.1 seconds.

Fitted with a six-speed automatic transmission and a small 9.8-kWh battery pack, the Captur E-Tech is the most powerful version of the small SUV to date. It has a WLTP-rated electric range of 30 miles (48 kilometers) and emits just 34 g/km in the combined cycle. When it runs solely on electric power, the vehicle tops out at 83 mph (134 km/h) whereas in hybrid mode it can reach 107 mph (172 km/h).

Expect the equivalent Juke to have similar numbers, along with a smaller cargo capacity than the gasoline-fueled version as the Captur E-Tech has a smaller trunk due to the added hardware of the hybrid setup.

The Renault-Nissan alliance has invested heavily in the new CMF-EV architecture engineered specifically for electric vehicles. Therefore, it doesn’t come as a surprise more zero-emissions models are in the pipeline to spread out the development costs. Following the Ariya and Megane electric crossovers, a smaller vehicle is allegedly coming, according to a new report published by Auto Express.

The British magazine claims Nissan is working on a Juke-like EV with a choice between a single-motor, rear-wheel-drive model and a more expensive, dual-motor derivative equipped with AWD. It would follow the same strategy used by the larger Ariya, with a potential coupe-like body style arriving later in the life cycle.

By having a completely flat floor and moving the hardware related to the air conditioning system under the hood, the Juke EV (name not confirmed) will have a more spacious interior than the conventionally powered crossover. Expect Nissan to maximize wheelbase by shaving off the front and rear overhangs as much as possible to maintain a similar footprint as the standard Juke.

The report goes on to say the all-electric Juke would inherit the 63-kWh battery from the Ariya without offering the optional 87-kWh pack available in the larger electric SUV. Charging at up to 100 kW will be supported, while a full charge should provide enough juice for approximately 250 miles (402 kilometers) of range in the WLTP cycle.

A cheaper entry-level model could happen, featuring a smaller battery and consequently less range. The new model has its work cut out for it given the stiff competition in the small electric crossover segment. It would have to fight the Hyundai Kona Electric, Peugeot e-2008, Opel/Vauxhall Mokka-e, and other models.

It’s not clear at this point when the Juke EV will be launched, Auto Express doesn’t explicitly say, although we’re not expecting it to hit the market before 2023.
