As cars get more technologically advanced, an increasing number of automakers are choosing the Consumer Electronics Show to tease next-generation software and hardware. Case in point, we already know Mercedes will use the CES 2021 event as a venue to provide a sneak preview of its curved display planned to debut in the EQS electric sedan. A new report states General Motors also has something on the agenda for what will be a digital-only event due to the coronavirus pandemic.
According to Automotive News, a plug-in hybrid Chevrolet pickup truck will be teased at CES next month as a concept. In addition, GM will take the same approach for future Cadillac models as well for other brands. Not only that, but we’ll also get to learn more from company president Mark Reuss about what GM has in tow regarding its ambitious EV strategy.
The jury is still out on what sort of name the electrified Chevy truck will wear as it’s unclear whether it will stick to the Silverado moniker or it’s going to adopt a fresh designation. Regardless of how it will be baptized, a production variant is widely believed to slot below the hotly anticipated GMC Hummer EV truck scheduled to enter production late next year.
As a refresher, 2021 will be the year when GM will introduce the updated Bolt electric hatchback together with a first-ever crossover version (pictured above), complete with a Chevy-first Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system. Come 2022, the Cadillac Lyriq electric SUV is slated to hit the market at a starting price expected to undercut the Tesla Model X.
In the long run, GM will be investing $27 billion through the middle of the decade and will be launching at least 30 fully electric vehicles all over the world until the end of 2025. About two-thirds of these EVs will be sold in North America, including a GMC Hummer SUV likely debuting in February 2021 to complement the namesake pickup truck. Also on the “to do” list is a GMC Sierra electric equivalent, although it’s not known what it will be called.
