Skoda planning smaller, affordable electric crossover below Enyaq iV

It’s a known fact Skoda is plotting a coupe-styled version of its Enyaq iV electric SUV, but there are additional zero-emissions models in the pipeline. Cheaper electric vehicles have already been promised, and one of them will be a more compact crossover. The important disclosure is made in a recent report from British magazine Autocar, claiming the new arrival will be related to the Volkswagen ID.3 hatchback.

That makes sense considering the Enyaq is essentially a larger and more spacious version of the ID.4. Skoda’s design boss Oliver Stefani told Autocar the company will continue to prioritize cargo capacity going forward as the Czech brand is aware it’s one of the main reasons that customers choose to buy their cars.

Skoda is confident a model that maximizes interior room can still be a “nice, attractive car” even with an extended wheelbase and longer rear overhang. That being said, the Enyaq Coupe will be more along the lines of a style-driven EV as it will sacrifice some of the practicality in exchange for a coupe-styled roofline. The different body will likely impact rear headroom and the amount of space in the cargo area, but Skoda is confident it’s a sacrifice some people will be willing to make.

Details about the more compact crossover are shrouded in mystery at this point, but we do know it’s expected to arrive in the coming years. At the same time, Skoda is working on an entry-level EV on the MEB Lite architecture currently being developed by SEAT. Logic tells us the Spanish brand will get its own version of the electric car, along with the VW main brand to replace the e-up! with an ID.1 (name not official). These small EVs will be coming out around the middle of the decade.

Expect these new electric cars from Skoda to be among the most spacious in their respective segments, much like the combustion-engined models are the roomiest. Nothing beats the practicality of an Octavia or a Superb, and this characteristic will continue in the EV era.
