Even though Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has been teasing the ID. Buzz relentlessly, YouTuber Bjørn Nyland is providing us with our best look yet at the electric van. Still carrying the colorful camouflage, the EV revival of the Microbus was spotted at a fast-charging station in Norway parked between a Tesla Model S and a Porsche Taycan.
Interestingly, the 2023 VW ID. Buzz appears to be more compact than we originally believed since the video gives us the impression it’s narrower and shorter than the red Tesla. It should still be quite spacious thanks to a boxy shape with short overhangs and a tall roofline. The prototype depicts a passenger model, but a commercial derivative is in the pipeline, with a California camper to follow from 2025.
VW has been coy on details, but we do know the ID. Buzz will borrow the MEB platform that has already underpinned the ID.3 hatchback along with the ID.4, ID.5, and the ID.6 SUVs. Confirmed to go on sale later this year in Europe and from 2023 in the United States, the electric people-mover is going to be sold with a couple of drivetrains and battery packages.
Logic tells us buyers will get to pick from rear- and all-wheel drive, with a single- and dual-motor setup. The biggest battery currently offered by VW for its ID-badged models has a total capacity of 82 kWh, which translates to a useable capacity of 77 kWh. It would make sense for the ID. Buzz to get it as well, perhaps an even bigger pack seeing as how it will be able to carry more people than the existing ID. models.
Touted as being VW’s most emotional EV, the much-hyped ID. Buzz will officially break cover on March 9. When the disguise will drop, it won’t be as interesting as the namesake concept from January 2017, but we’re still hoping for quite a few retro touches as a nod to its ancestor.
