Obviously, the BMW iX1 is based on the third-generation BMW X1, which also just debuted. While that means the iX1 is still based on a conventional chassis, and not a bespoke EV architecture, BMW’s new FAAR front-wheel drive platform was developed with electrification in mind. Plus, its front-wheel drive layout offers more space for a battery pack in the floor than a rear-drive layout, while also providing more passenger space.

438km Range

At the start, there will only be one model–the BMW iX1 xDrive30. Being an xDrive model, it has two electric motors, one at each axle, which combine to make 308 horsepower (230 kW) and 364 lb-ft (494 Nm) of torque. BMW claims a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) time of 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 112 mph (180 km/h). Providing the electricity to make that happen is a 64.7 kWh (usable) battery pack which, according to the WLTP cycle, should provide 413–438 km (257 – 272 miles) of range.

Interestingly, the BMW iX1 lacks the charge speed of its older, more expensive siblings. Both the BMW i4 and iX can charge at 200 kW but the iX1’s max charge speed is just 130 kw. Although, due to its small-ish battery pack, it can refill its battery relatively quickly, even without hyper-fast charging. At that 130 kW charging speed, BMW claims 10-80 percent state of charge can be replenished in 29 minutes. Or, if you’re in a pinch and pressed for time, it will recharged 75 miles worth of driving range in just ten minutes, while charging at top speed.

Visually, there isn’t much different about the BMW iX1, versus the standard X1. It looks identical from the outside, save for a couple of blue highlights. However, that’s likely going to turn out to be one of its strongest attributes, as customers will be able to simply choose their X1 powertrain of choice and not have to choose between different designs. The familiarity to the standard X1 will also give new customers an easier transition into electric vehicles.

Minimalistic Interior Design

Inside, the BMW iX1 is again quite similar to its standard X1 sibling though, again, that’s not a bad thing. The design is open and spacious, with an emphasis on practicality and ergonomics but it isn’t to drab. In fact, it’s a smart looking, premium interior with some really nice touches. For instance, the metal bottom spokes on the steering wheel are sculpted nicely, the way the wood trim wraps around the dashboard to meet the door trim is lovely, and the checker board-pattern on the speaker grilles looks cool. I also really dig the cantilevered arm rest, a la BMW iX. Except the cupholders are far better placed in the iX1 than in the iX.

Pricing for the BMW iX1 will start at 55,000 euros in Germany. Sadly, the iX1 won’t be coming to America.

The electric BMW X1 likely won’t be unveiled until late 2022, but a few details are starting to come out. BMW has been testing the iX1 since November 2020, so it’s high time for the camouflage to drop. The FAAR-based crossover will look largely the same in ICE and EV flavors of the new BMW X1. A dedicated BMW page reveals today a few tidbits, such as a teaser image and the iX1’s codename – U11. By far the most important information is the maximum WLTP range of 413 to 438 kilometers (257 to 272 miles).

But these are not the final figures as BMW mentions they’re predicted values based on the vehicle’s current development status. Even so, we get a rough estimate of how much the iX1 will be able to travel before running out of juice. As with every other electric vehicle out there, range will depend on a number of factors. For example, the size of the wheels will negatively impact efficiency. In addition, the amount of equipment also matters since a fully loaded car weighs more and therefore it reduces range. With BMW estimating the iX1 will have an energy consumption of 17.3 kWh-18.4 WLTP, we can deduct the battery size.

The BMW iX1 should carry a battery with a net capacity of approximately 70 kWh. As expected, the pack is slightly smaller than that of the iX3, which has a usable capacity of 73.83 kWh. The iX xDrive40 has a battery with a net capacity of 71 kWh while the upper trims have a 105-kWh pack. We’ve heard through the grapevine there will be a BMW iX1 xDrive30 with about 270 horsepower. It’ll draw its necessary juice from an 80-kWh battery pack taken from the iX3. The all-wheel-drive model will be joined by an eDrive20 with a front-mounted motor, believed to be borrowed from the MINI Cooper SE.

BMW will start iX1 production in November, so the first customer deliveries should take place in early 2023. It will be built in Leipzig, Germany alongside the mechanically related MINI Countryman.

In its second generation since 2015, BMW’s smallest crossover is undergoing final testing ahead of next year when the revamped model will debut with an all-new design inside and out. Ahead of its official premiere, the luxury compact model has been spied on a rainy day in Munich while undergoing final testing. This isn’t just any version of the Mercedes GLA rival, but the first-ever fully electric derivative.

To be sold as the iX1, the completely silent crossover had the production-ready body as well as the final headlights and taillights. Despite the full camouflage, you can see the charging port is on the rear-right fender where you’ll find the fuel cap on the X1 powered by combustion engines. The disguise can’t hide the vehicle’s more grown-up appearance making it look like a proper SUV rather than a raised hatchback.

Going up against the Mercedes EQA, the BMW iX1 will be mechanically twinned with the next generation of the Mini Countryman, which is also going to spawn a zero-emissions flavor. Expect a bump in size over the outgoing model, along with a more upright roofline to create a stronger visual distinction from the swoopy X2 crossover-coupe. Inside, logic tells us Bavaria’s entry-level X offering will boast the iDrive 8 infotainment system recently seen on the iX and i4 electric models.

The iX1 should go on sale either by the end of 2022 or early 2023 and will be offered alongside gasoline and diesel models. Much like it’s the case with the current model, its replacement will also offer a plug-in hybrid powertrain, which will likely have a lot in common with the all-wheel-drive PHEV variant of the new 2 Series Active Tourer minivan.

Riding on an evolution of the BMW Group’s UKL platform dubbed FAAR, the 2023 X1 should benefit from the company’s fifth-generation eDrive setup. However, it’s unclear whether it will come only in a two-wheel-drive configuration as it’s the case with the bigger iX3 or there are plans to also give it electric motors at both axles to enable an xDrive setup.

The iX1 is a vital model in terms of volume for BMW’s greater EV plan, which also includes electric versions of the next 5 Series and 7 Series sedans. In addition, China is getting a new i3 next year that will take the shape of a long-wheelbase 3 Series Sedan without an ICE.

BMW is lagging behind its premium competition in the electric vehicle market. Its BMW i4 and iX are impressive on paper but have yet to be tested properly by any publications, nor have either of them reached dealerships yet. Over the past few years, though, Audi three all-new fully electric models (five, if you count Sportback variants) and Mercedes-Benz released three as well. Yet, BMW’s two haven’t even hit the road yet. However, BMW CEO Oliver Zipse promises that four new purely electric models will be here in just two years’ time.

“We are fully committed to electric cars wherever the use of battery-electric drive trains makes sense, and it is possible because the conditions are right,” Zipse said during a recent earnings call.

According to Automotive News Europe, the four cars will be an all-electric 7 Series, 5 Series, X1, and MINI Countryman. The first ones to come will be the 7 Series and the X1, which are said to go fully electric as early as next year.

“By 2023 we will offer our customers at least one BEV option in nearly all our vehicle segments and over the next 10 years we aim to release a total of about 10 million fully electric vehicles onto the market,” he said.

These new vehicles will be built on BMW’s Neue Klasse architecture, harking back to the Neue Klasse chassis vehicles of the’60s and ’70s. Those iconic vehicles launched BMW into new territory, so the idea is that this new Neue Klasse can do it again. There’s a bit of confusion about the nature of the Neue Klasse and what sort of powertrains it will use but the idea is that it will be designed for EVs first but can also accommodate internal combustion, for hybrids, and even hydrogen.

“Our new vehicle architecture is uncompromisingly electric, whether with battery power or hydrogen,” said Zipse.

According to this same report, the Neue Klasse will be a highly flexible architecture that will underpin the widest range of vehicles of any BMW chassis yet. It will even underpin some Rolls-Royce models, which is interesting considering the latter brand’s relatively recent investment in its own bespoke luxury architecture.

“The Neue Klasse comes with a new IT and software architecture, as well as newly developed high-performance electric drive train and battery generation,” he said.

BMW has high hopes for its new EVs; the i4, iX, and whatever comes next. In fact, BMW hopes to sell two million EVs to customers by 2025, an ambitious goal to say the least. Let’s hope BMW’s right, though, as the more EVs on the road, the better.
