Dodge has already teased a zero-emissions muscle car ahead of a 2024 launch, but there’s more to come on the electrification front before then. In an interview with Automotive News, company CEO Tim Kuniskis disclosed plans for an EV concept scheduled to make an appearance at some point in 2022.

Also coming next year is a production car equipped with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Dodge’s head honcho refused to go into details about the PHEV, but it’s widely believed it will be the Hornet compact crossover twinned with the forthcoming Alfa Romeo Tonale.

We will learn more about the road-going PHEV and the conceptual EV in the fourth quarter of this year when Dodge will outline its electrification plans. With the new models, Tim Kuniskis wants to lure in different customers without alienating the current ones.

The concept car coming next year will “explain to people exactly what we’re going to do.” The company’s boss went on to say that in the electric era, Dodge will remain a muscle car brand first and the electrification component will only make it better.

The fresh batch of electrified products is set to remain on the market for a “long time,” which is something we can also say about Dodge’s current crop of gas-guzzling muscle cars as they’ve been around for many years.

Dodge, one of the 14 brands of the newly formed Stellantis automotive conglomerate, is set to benefit from investments in the next 10 years. The world’s fourth-largest car manufacturer has vowed to invest in all of its marques, and that will include even troubled brands such as Lancia and Alfa Romeo.

To spread out the costs and speed up development, we are going to models that will share the underpinnings and most of the other hardware, with the Tonale coming next year serving as a relevant example. The PHEV crossover could spawn other versions aside from the rumored Dodge Hornet, and we wouldn’t be surprised if an equivalent Lancia is in the works.

Stellantis EV Day 2021 saw some major announcements being made, chief of which was Dodge’s shocking promise to roll out an all-electric muscle car. Signaling that the limits of the internal combustion engine have been nearly reached, the American muscle car company says the only way to extract more power is to adopt electrification.

It won’t be released until 2024, but the adjacent teaser video suggests Dodge will come out with a concept car in the near future. Eagle-eyed readers will notice the zero-emissions muscle car is doing a four-wheel burnout, which likely means it features all-wheel drive courtesy of dual electric motors – one mounted at the front and the other at the rear.

Interestingly, Dodge insists it won’t sell electric vehicles, and yet the official clip clearly shows the shadowy profile of an EV. Perhaps the model in question won’t be labeled as a Dodge, but rather as a Mopar. For what it’s worth, Dodge vows to sell “American Muscle.” That honestly seems a bit confusing to be honest, but it’s pretty clear the muscle car, in general, is heading towards the EV era.

From a company known to extract absurd amounts of horsepower from an internal combustion engine, Dodge is ready to embrace electrification to take the muscle car genre to the next level. The makers of bonkers models such as the Challenger SRT Demon drag-racing king and the Charger Hellcat Redeye super sedan are getting ready to hop on the electric bandwagon.

There’s not much to go by looking at these teaser images, but we’re getting the impression it will be a retro-styled EV. We’re curious to find out what name Dodge will choose for its new breed of muscle cars, either a fresh moniker or it will revive an old name with an electric twist to signal the lack of a large-displacement combustion engine. The illuminated red logo is not all that new as it’s a modernized version of the Fratzog badge used from the early 1960s until the latter half of the 1970s.

It is a known fact Stellantis is working on an all-new small crossover for Alfa Romeo to slot below the Stelvio. New intel indicates there will be an equivalent Dodge model coming to the North American market where it would be sold alongside the Tonale. According to Passione Auto Italiane, a mechanically related Dodge Hornet will be heading to the United States.

If the report turns out to be accurate, the more compact crossover would be the first new Dodge since the 2013 Dart. The name seems plausible considering parent company Stellantis has taken the legal measures to register “Hornet” and “Dodge Hornet” with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The model is allegedly going to be assembled in Italy at the Campano plant alongside Alfa Romeo’s version.

Alfa’s version has already been confirmed to get a plug-in hybrid powertrain, which is the reason why the Tonale has been delayed by three months. CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato admitted the PHEV’s performance is not up to Alfa Romeo’s sporty reputation, hence why he has tasked the engineers to make the crossover a bit more exciting before its market launch.

Previewed by a namesake concept in March 2019, the Tonale will go on sale in June 2022. It’s unclear whether the Dodge version will offer a PHEV setup, but that would make sense taking into account Imparato recently said that “if you are not electrified, you are dead.”

Dodge is in dire need of fresh products because it cannot bank on the popularity of its Challenger and Charger muscle cars forever. The Durango has been around for a decade, so it’s safe to say the company’s lineup is getting a bit long in the tooth. We are not expecting the Hornet to get the high-performance Hellcat treatment, but a spicy SRT derivative could be in the works, potentially with the PHEV system to rival the Jeep Wrangler 4xe.
