It was mid-November 2021 when Kia signaled its intentions towards coming out with an electric SUV bigger than the EV6. The Concept EV9 arrived at the Los Angeles Auto Show as a three-row family hauler with a boxy shape and a sharp exterior design. Fast forward to today, the company’s UK division has announced a production version will follow next year. Kia only confirms European availability, but we’re expecting the zero-emissions vehicle to be sold in other regions as well shortly thereafter.

As a refresher, the EV was imposingly large, stretching at 4,930 millimeters (194 inches) long, 2,055 mm (81 in) wide, and 1,790 mm (70 in) tall, with an extended wheelbase measuring 3,100 mm (122 in). Sadly, the new press release issued this week doesn’t contain any additional information about what will be a sister model of the Hyundai Ioniq 7. Later, a more upscale equivalent from Genesis should hit the market.

Kia Concept EV9

We will remind you Kia mentioned the Concept EV9 had an unspecified battery pack to cover 300 miles (483 kilometers) between charges. The electric showcar from LA was touted as having support for a maximum charging power of 350 kW. Consequently, the South Korean brand said juicing up the battery from 10 to 80 percent could be achieved in as little as half an hour or even less.

The concept’s exterior is unlikely to change too much on the road to production, but the fancy cabinis unlikely to be this high-tech for the road-going model. The Concept EV9 had a giant 27-inch screen along with a lounge-like configuration by changing the seat layout. The second row transformed into a table while the driver and front passenger were able to face the third-row occupants thanks to swiveling front seats.

Chances are the EV9 will arrive in the United States for the 2024 model year and we’d wager it’s going to set you back approximately $50,000. That seems like an educated guess considering the EV6 begins at $40,900 MSRP before any applicable EV-related incentives.

Hyundai and Genesis announced yesterday plans to introduce 17 fully electric vehicles until the end of the decade. Sister brand Kia is also making a commitment to bolster its EV portfolio by launching two new models per year starting with 2023. Previously, the South Korean brand had planned to introduce 11 cars by 2026.

Leading the way will be the EV9, a large SUV previewed last year by a namesake concept. It’ll be about five meters long and will aim to provide approximately 540 kilometers (336 miles) of range on a single charge. Thanks to fast-charging capabilities, juicing up the battery for just six minutes will provide the vehicle with a range of 62 miles (100 kilometers).

Despite being large and heavy, the EV9’s dual motors will enable a 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) run in five seconds. We also get to learn it will be the first model from Kia to support over-the-air (OTA) updates as well as feature on demand (FoD) services. The latter will allow owners to access functions by paying a subscription or a one-time fee to unlock functions. The EV9 will also be the firm’s first vehicle to benefit from the AutoMode autonomous driving system.

Kia Concept EV9

Interestingly, Kia confirms two of the new EVs will be pickups – one riding on a dedicated platform and a cheaper truck likely based on an architecture for combustion-engined cars that will be sold in emerging markets. In addition, an entry-level electric vehicle was confirmed today to arrive within the next five years.

In the long run, Kia wants to reach annual EV sales of 1.2 million by the end of the decade or 30% of its global sales. The vast majority of sales (80%) are projected to come from Europe, China, North America, and Korea where the brand estimates EVs will account for a 45% share of its total sales. Midsize electric SUVs and pickups will be produced in the United States from 2024. Small and medium-sized electric cars will enter production in Europe from 2025.

Also set to hit the assembly line in 2025 will be midsize EVs and an entry-level model in India. Before all of these arrive, Kia will commence production of midsize EVs in China from next year. At the same time, the company is upgrading its battery production output and wants to boost battery energy density by 50% by 2030 while reducing costs by 40%.

Following a lengthy teaser campaign, Kia has finally taken the wraps off the Concept EV9 at the 2021 Los Angeles Auto Show. Boxy and large, the large SUV with angular styling looks imposing from all angles and foretells what will likely be the largest model from the South Korean brand to ride on the E-GMP platform. Needless to say, the production version will be positioned above the low-slung EV6 introduced earlier this year.

Riding on massive 22-inch wheels, the Concept EV9 is 4,930 millimeters (194 inches) long, 2,055 mm (81 in) wide, and stands 1,790 mm (70 in) tall, with a large wheelbase measuring 3,100 mm (122 in). Details about the battery pack have not been disclosed, but we do know it has enough energy for as much as 300 miles and supports fast charging at 350 kW. In only 20-30 minutes, the battery pack can be replenished from 10% to 80%.

The concept car features a massive panoramic glass roof to make the cabin feel even more spacious than it already is. Speaking of the cabin, it’s home to a massive 27-inch display occupying the better part of the dashboard where there are a few touch-sensitive controls providing quick access to several functions. The three-row interior can be configured by choosing from Active, Pause, and Enjoy modes.

When Active mode is turned on, the Kia Concept EV9 is on the move and the cabin remains in its conventional configuration, while the other two modes work only when the electric SUV is not in motion. Pause mode transforms the cabin into a “first-class lounge” with seats that switch around, allowing those sitting on the first and third rows to face each other while the row in the middle becomes a table.

As for the Enjoy mode, the interior morphs into a “downtime breakout space” as it turns around the three rows of seats and opens the tailgate to allow those sitting inside to check out the outdoors. Sustainable and ecological materials have been used throughout the cabin, including vegan leather as well as recycled plastic bottles and recycled wool fibers.

It’s unclear when the road-going model will arrive, but we’d wager the Kia Concept EV9 will morph into a production model before 2025.

In a teaser released a few days ago announcing a livestream for the Concept EV9 on November 11, Kia strongly suggested it would unveil the all-electric showcar. However, that’s not the case because we are only getting a set of five shadowy pics showing the large and boxy SUV inside and out. Some design details remain a secret for the time being, but not for long as the official premiere is taking place next week.

Ahead of the November 17 debut slated to take place at the LA Auto Show, Kia shows off the edgy design of the Concept EV9. Details about the vehicle’s size have not been published, but it’s safe to say the SUV is considerably larger than the compact EV6 introduced earlier this year. Much like it has been the case with concept cars recently, the vehicle rides on oversized alloy wheels and eschews conventional side mirrors in favor of cameras.

Featuring a prominently angular design, the EV9 has chunky wheel arches with black plastic cladding and we also notice imposing character lines on the front fenders that split into two to form a “Y” shape. You can also see a generous sunroof extending from front to rear, while sleek LED taillights give the massive SUV a futuristic vibe worthy of a concept car.

The short front and rear overhangs are signs of a dedicated electric vehicle platform, likely the E-GMP shared with the EV6. As with the smaller crossover, the wheelbase is rather huge, thus creating a cabin likely spacious enough for a three-seat layout for the Concept EV9’s subsequent production version. By the way, the road-going model could arrive before the middle of the decade.

Meanwhile, the LA-bound vehicle appears to have a lounge-like interior with an extremely wide screen mounted on the dashboard, merging the driver’s digital instrument cluster with the infotainment. The steering wheel is not exactly a wheel per se as it adopts an edgy shape, much like the rest of the Concept EV9.

Squint your eyes and you can see capacitive touch buttons mounted below the infotainment and illuminated in white. Traditional buttons and knobs are nowhere to be found inside where the front passenger and driver are separated by a large, full-length center console. Overall, the cabin looks impressively modern, though we’re curious to see how much of it will have a correspondent on the production-ready model.

Meanwhile, the Kia Concept EV9 will share the spotlight in Los Angeles next week with the equivalent Hyundai showcar, the SEVEN concept. It’s a known fact the latter will go on sale in 2024, so logic tells us its Kia cousin will probably follow shortly since the two SUVs are likely to be twinned.

It was only a few days ago when Hyundai teased the SEVEN electric SUV to preview the concept’s official debut slated for November 17 and now Kia is making a similar announcement. As a matter of fact, we will actually be seeing the Concept EV9 sooner since the world premiere is programmed to take place on November 10.

The announcement was made by Kia on its social media accounts, accompanied by a shadowy teaser image hinting at boxy styling with a nearly flat roofline and an upright rear end. Some are speculating it’s a zero-emissions adaptation of the Telluride, but that’s not the case since “EV” models will be dedicated electric cars, which wouldn’t be the case for a Telluride without an internal combustion engine.

Given the use of figure “9,” we are certain it will be larger than the EV6 unveiled earlier this year. Whether it will be big enough to accommodate a third row of seats remains to be seen, although we believe that will be the case and the cabin is going to be spacious enough to seat seven or eight people. The model in question could be mechanically related to the aforementioned SEVEN concept from Hyundai, which will evolve into the Ioniq 7 production electric SUV in 2024.

These two, presumably three-row SUVs will ride on the same E-GMP platform already being used for the Ioniq 5, EV6, and the Genesis GV60. We can already tell the Kia EV9 sits on a bespoke EV platform by the short front and rear overhangs, allowing the engineers to stretch the wheelbase. Perhaps the new electric SUV will be about as long as the Sorento while offering room inside the cabin comparable to the larger Telluride.

Given what will be a large SUV, chances are Kia will sell the EV9 exclusively with dual motors and all-wheel drive, but that remains to be seen. The E-GMP platform can certainly support a considerable amount of power seeing as how the EV6 GT packs a meaty 577 horsepower and 740 Newton-meters (546 pound-feet) of torque. The sporty crossover does 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in only three and a half seconds, but the EV9 using this powertrain would be slower due to the extra weight.

We will have all the details soon as the Kia Concept EV9 will break cover on Thursday, with the road-going model likely arriving within the next couple of years.
