Maserati has taken the wraps off its very first all-electric SUV. Scheduled to go on sale by mid-2023, the Grecale without a combustion engine will carry the “Forgole” prefix serving as an identifier of all things EV from Modena. Compared to the gasoline-powered model, it has a slightly different look while retaining the same Giorgio platform inherited from the Alfa Romeo Stelvio.

You can tell which is which by the redesigned front grille with curved slats flanking the Trident logo. For the zero-emissions model, Maserati has created an exclusive Rame Folgore paint developed after analyzing how paint can interact with light. The inspiration also came from contemporary architecture, including the façade of the Guggenheim in Bilbao. For this reason, the Folgore Grecale has copper tones, such as for the badges on the front fender and tailgate.

Along with sharing official images, the Italian marque is providing some key technical specifications. For example, we know the silent Grecale will offer 800 Newton-meters of torque. As with every other EV out there, the 590 lb-ft will kick in virtually instantly. Although not specified, the Folgore has probably been engineered with one electric motor at the front and another for the rear to enable all-wheel drive. For what it’s worth, the four- and six-cylinder models all have AWD as standard.

Specifically created for the ICE-less Grecale are new alloy wheels with an aero-driven design judging by the extensions on the sides of the spokes. They likely improve airflow to increase efficiency and therefore maximize the crossover’s range between charging. Needless to say, the prominent exhaust tips of the gasoline variants have been removed, enabling a cleaner rear end design in the process.

Although the range has not been mentioned, we do know the Folgore Grecale will have an impressively large battery with a capacity of 105 kWh. It’s unclear whether Maserati is referring to gross or net capacity, but it’s pretty big nonetheless. The electric crossover will be assembled at home in Italy and aims to deliver an “everyday exceptional experience” along with 400V tech to support fast charging.

It will be joined by purely electric derivatives of the next-gen GranTurismo and GranCabrio due in 2023, with EV variants of the MC20 supercar as well as replacements for the Quattroporte and Levante arriving by 2025. Come 2030, Maserati will become an entirely electric brand by ditching combustion engines altogether.

Maserati has announced plans to become a purely electric brand by the end of the decade. Leading the way for the Italian marque’s bold EV agenda will be the GranTurismo. The next-generation sports car will carry the Folgore suffix, which will be used by all zero-emissions cars going forward. The new GT without a combustion engine is going to break cover later this year before going on sale in 2023.

Surprisingly revealing teaser images have been published by the Stellantis brand, along with some juicy technical specifications. The Folgore GranTurismo will pack a whopping 1,200 horsepower to hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in less than three seconds. Flat out, the electric supercar will reach in excess of 186 mph (300 km/h). With one electric motor at the front and another at the rear, the performance EV is going to benefit from all-wheel drive.

The revamped GranTurismo will be assembled at home in Mirafiori and promises to deliver “cutting-edge technical solutions derived from Formula E, superb performance, comfort and elegance.” In addition, Maserati says the equivalent GranCabrio is also earmarked for a release sometime next year and it too will be offered as an EV.

Debuting in the coming days after several delays, the midsize Grecale crossover will spawn an electric variant in 2023 to follow the combustion-engined model and its mild-hybrid tech. By the middle of the decade, the next-generation Quattroporte will also offer an EV version, along with the MC20 performance coupe as well as the replacement for the fullsize Levante SUV.

Interestingly, Maserati isn’t saying a word about the smaller Ghibli sedan, which might not be included in the company’s future. That being said, the Italian brand has not specified if and when it will discontinue the aging model. By 2025, the company with the Trident logo says all of its models will offer an EV option, which could mean the Ghibli will be axed within the next three years.

Maserati has pledged to launch a purely electric version of each new model going forward, including the MC20 supercar introduced in 2021. The first of the bunch to eschew the ol’ internal combustion engine will be the Grecale. Originally programmed to break cover last year, the compact crossover positioned below the Levante was pushed back due to the microchip shortage.

The official reveal has been rescheduled for March 22, and in the meantime, Maserati keeps teasing its Porsche Macan rival. Automotive News Europe has added one important piece of the Grecale’s puzzle by finding out the EV model won’t sit on a bespoke electric car architecture. Some had assumed the zero-emissions model would be underpinned by one of the new electric platforms parent company Stellantis is developing.

However, that won’t be the case since the Grecale EV will use an adaptation of the existing Giorgio platform. It has underpinned the Alfa Romeo Grecale sedan and Stelvio SUV, but neither are offered by the Italian brand with a PHEV setup. The platform cost $1 billion to develop, so it makes sense the automaker is looking to spread out the costs by using it for additional models.

It is believed the purely electric crossover won’t debut until sometime next year, with ANE adding the Giorgio platform will be “heavily reengineered” by Maserati. So much so the Grecale EV will support the 800-volt architecture, much like the forthcoming Porsche Macan EV. That will drastically reduce the charging time, as will be demonstrated in the coming months on the electric MC20.

While the Grecale will ride on an EV adaptation of a platform originally intended for cars with combustion engines, it’ll be a different story with the Ghibli and Quattroporte. The two sedans will sit on a dedicated electric architecture, likely derived from the already announced STLA Small and STLA Medium platforms.

Stellantis, the world’s fourth-largest car manufacturer, has no fewer than four troubled Italian brands under its large corporate umbrella: Abarth, Lancia, Alfa Romeo, and Maserati. The most premium of the lot will benefit from a dedicated electric vehicle platform to serve as a foundation for new sedans. These products will replace the aging Ghibli and Quattroporte, which have both been around since 2013.

According to Automotive News Europe, citing Italian newspaper La Repubblica, Maserati’s parent company Stellantis will produce the next-generation Maseratis sedans at the Mirafiori factory in Italy. At the same facility, the Levante SUV and Fiat 500 are also assembled, with the production of the latter likely to increase in the following period.

It is worth noting the current Ghibli and Quattroporte are both manufactured at Grugliasco, meaning the production of the two sedans will be moved for the EV models about 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) to Mirafiori. According to the same report, these new zero-emissions vehicles will arrive between 2022 and 2024, with the larger of the two sedans expected to hit the market first.

The Modena-based brand has a lot on its plate regarding its product overhaul as virtually all models will be updated. The next-generation GranTurismo going on sale in 2022 has already been confirmed to get an EV option, and the same thing can be said about its GranCabrio counterpart. Before that happens, the Grecale smaller crossover will premiere on November 16 and it too will be available as an electric vehicle.

Even the MC20 supercar, Maserati’s flagship model, is getting an EV derivative, and the same will happen with the next-gen Levante earmarked for a 2023 release. It’s safe to say Stellantis is preparing the company with the trident logo for the impending electric era, and it’s only a matter of time before the Ghibli and Quattroporte sedans will receive a charging port.
