After a busy 2021 in terms of EV launches, Mercedes is gearing up for another year with numerous electric models. Chief of which will be the EQS SUV, which Autocar states will be previewed in near-production guise this April at the Beijing Motor Show in China. Fast forward to November, the Guangzhou Motor Show will allegedly host the world premiere of the smaller EQE SUV.

It goes to show how important the Chinese market has become for Mercedes, especially since the smaller EQB made its debut in the People’s Republic as well last year. The two newcomers will obviously serve as SUV equivalents of the EQS and EQE sedans introduced in 2021. However, the bigger of the two high-riding models will be more practical by offering three-row seating. It’s said to stretch at 5,160 mm (203 inches), thus making it long enough for a seven-seat cabin.

Autocar goes on to say the EQS SUV will be equipped with a 108-kWh battery feeding juice to a pair of electric motors. One will sit at the front while the other will drive the rear wheels to enable a standard AWD system. Expect up to 516 horsepower and 630 pound-feet (854 Newton-meters) of torque for the EQS 580 SUV, which will spawn a more luxurious version for the Maybach sub-brand. Interestingly, the upscale model might switch to the EQS 600 name to showcase its extra power over its Benz-branded counterpart.

As for the EQE SUV, it will make do with a smaller 90.6-kWh lithium-ion battery pack and is expected to be offered in a simpler rear-wheel-drive configuration. Of course, more expensive and potent variants will add a front electric motor for the 4Matic-badged flavors. The base trim level is said to pack 288 hp and 391 lb-ft (530 Nm), although these output numbers have not been confirmed.

We wouldn’t hold our breath for ultra-quick charging thanks to an 800V electrical architecture since both the EQE SUV and EQS SUV will come with only a 400V setup. Mercedes will assemble the zero-emissions SUV duo at its Tuscaloosa plant in Alabama, United States where the conventionally powered GLE and GLS are manufactured.

Both should be on sale either by the end of the year or early 2023, with the bigger EQS SUV coming first. Further down the line, more powerful AMG derivatives will arrive to mirror the AMG-badged EQE and EQS sedans unveiled in 2021.

Joining the EQA, EQB, EQE, and EQS will be a fifth electric SUV. We’re talking about the EQG slated to arrive in 2024. In the meantime, the EQC will probably switch to its second generation and will have a sedan equivalent serving as the electric C-Class.

Mercedes is just getting started with the expansion of the EQ family as after the EQA, EQB, EQE, and EQS all launched this year, 2022 will see the number of dedicated electric vehicles grow by two. Both the EQE SUV and EQS SUV are set to debut in 2022 and enter production before the end of the year at the Tuscaloosa plant in the United States.

In the meantime, a prototype of the smaller zero-emissions SUV has been spied undergoing testing on the streets of Germany on a beautiful fall day. Since the big debut is not due for a while, Mercedes is still keeping the vehicle’s design under wraps by applying full camouflage on the test vehicle’s body. Nevertheless, we are already getting the impression of a smaller EQS SUV, which the three-pointed star previewed in September at IAA Munich with the Maybach EQS SUV concept.

Those large alloys might not look all that nice, but their design serves a functional purpose as the EQE SUV will come with aerodynamically optimized wheels to maximize efficiency and squeeze out as much range as possible from the battery. Speaking of which, the EQE sedan boasts a 90-kWh pack (usable capacity) and we’re expecting its high-riding companion to feature an identical setup.

In the case of the sedan, the battery has enough juice for 410 miles (660 kilometers) of WLTP-certified range, but logic tells us the SUV will be heavier and therefore it won’t be able to match the regular EQE’s range. There is a distinct possibility Mercedes’ engineers will be able to fit a larger battery thanks to the vehicle’s larger footprint, but that remains to be seen.

When it comes to power, the EQE sedan comes from the time being only in a rear-wheel-drive version as the “350” model with a single motor mounted at the rear, delivering 288 hp (215 kW) and 530 Nm (391 lb-ft). Mercedes has already announced an all-wheel-drive EQE is en route, so rest assured the SUV equivalent is also going to receive the 4Matic badge by adding an e-motor at the front axle.

We should learn more about the EQE SUV in the coming months as we’re positive Mercedes is working on a lengthy teaser campaign in the build-up to the world premiere taking place at some point in 2022.

The EQS sedan will go down in history as the first dedicated electric vehicle from Mercedes and it also kickstarts the EV revolution from the three-pointed star. The smaller EQE sedan will follow in September, with the EQS SUV coming in 2022. Both these future electric models have already been teased, and now, we’re being given an early look at the EQE SUV.

Tucked away in a press release about the start of battery production for the EQS is an image showing the EQ lineup. From left to right, the EQA is joined by the EQB, EQS SUV and Sedan, EQE SUV, EQE Sedan, and the EQC. You can easily tell which one will take the most to reach the market judging by the amount of camouflage as the EQE SUV is heavily disguised.

Much like its bigger brother, the EQS SUV, the upcoming EQE SUV is going to be assembled in the United States, specifically at the plant in Tuscaloosa where Mercedes is manufacturing the GLE, GLE Coupe, and the fullsize GLS. The zero-emissions SUVs have been confirmed to enter production next year and will likely be available in North America as 2023MY products.

We should learn more about the SUV this fall when its Tesla Model S-rivaling sedan sibling will premiere at IAA in Munich. Both will ride on the same Electric Vehicle Architecture (EVA) as the larger EQS / EQS SUV and should come in both rear- and all-wheel-drive configurations depending on the number of electric motors.

In the long run, the EQ lineup teased here will further grow as an all-electric G-Class has already been confirmed. In addition, Mercedes has promised EV models for the ultra-luxury Maybach sub-brand as well as for the AMG performance arm. At the same time, it has formed a 50:50 joint venture with Geely to reinvent Smart as an electric-only brand, kicking off with a crossover slated for 2022 that will be preceded by a concept debuting this September.
