After introducing the ET7 large electric sedan at the beginning of the year, Chinese automaker NIO is now coming out with its kid brother – the new ET5. Unveiled during the NIO Day 2021 held in Suzhou, China, the stylish midsize family car features a design heavily influenced by its bigger sibling thanks to a sleek and minimalist look combined with a coupe-like roofline.

The 2022 Nio ET5 is the latest EV to adopt a full LED light bar on the trunk lid to provide a visual connection with the equally thin taillights. Another design trait it shares with other zero-emissions vehicles is represented by the pop-out door handles, which aside from making the side profile look cleaner, also improve airflow for better aerodynamics and increased range. The doors have a frameless layout and a soft-close function as you’ll find in luxury vehicles.

Overall, the electric sedan looks quite sporty and reminds us from some angles of the Porsche Taycan. The front design also adopts the “less is more” motif with tiny strips of LEDs for the daytime running lights along with a compact lighting module for the low/high beam. Nio decided to paint the ET5 in a new shade dubbed Sunbathe Yellow, which is exclusive to this model as is First Light Kiss. In total, there are nine hues to pick from.

The interior continues the theme seen on the outside by featuring an uncluttered look as Nio has removed most of the conventional buttons. The vast majority of functions are accessible through the massive center touchscreen, accompanied by a fully digital 10.2-inch instrument cluster. A cozy atmosphere is provided by the 256-color LED ambient lighting and a Dolby Atmos surround sound system.

Equipped with dual motors and all-wheel drive, the new ET5 offers a total output of 483 horsepower (360 kilowatts) and 516 pound-feet (700 Newton-meters) of torque. It’s enough electric punch for a 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) sprint in just 4.3 seconds in a stylish sedan that has a low drag coefficient of just 0.24. Stopping power is provided by a high-performance braking system developed in-house by Nio to fully stop the car from 62 mph (100 km/h) in 33.9 meters (111.2 feet)

The ET5 is 4790 mm (188.5 in) long, 1960 mm (77.1 in) wide, and 1499 mm (59 in) tall, with a wheelbase stretching at 2888 mm (113.7 in). Customers will get to pick from three batteries, starting off with a 75-kWh pack with enough juice for up to 550 kilometers (342 miles) of range. Up next is the 100-kWh battery providing a maximum range of 700 kilometers (435 miles), followed by the large 150-kWh pack enabling the EV to cover as much as 1,000 kilometers (621 miles). Bear in mind these numbers are based on the local CLTC test cycle.

Nio will kick off deliveries from September 2022 and claims the LiDAR-equipped ET5 has been engineered to achieve a maximum five-star rating in Euro NCAP and C-NCAP tests. It will carry a starting price of RMB 328,000 (about $51,500 at current exchange rates) before subsidies or RMB 258,000 ($40,500) with BaaS (Battery-as-a-Service).

When the updated Tesla Model S debuted at the beginning of the year, it claimed the official title for the world’s most aerodynamic production car. It has a drag coefficient of 0.208, which is precisely what Nio has managed to achieve with its new ET7 electric sedan. It goes to show how far Chinese automakers have come in recent years in terms of car development.

Mind you, these two EVs are not the sleekest car money can buy today as that title goes to the Mercedes EQS, which has a remarkable Cd of only 0.20. Still, it’s an impressive feat for the ET7, made possible by developing an active grille shutter and special underbody for optimal airflow. While some countries already allow cameras instead of mirrors, Nio’s electric car has conventional chunky side mirror caps, making the 0.208 drag coefficient even more impressive.

It took a lot of work to bring the Cd down, with Nio saying no fewer than 120 hours were spent in the wind tunnel to perfect the shape of the ET7. More than 800 CFD (computational fluid dynamics) simulation cases were necessary during the last two years to tweak 13 different areas of the electric sedan’s body.

From the inclination angle of the windshield to the wheels, every little detail has been refined to achieve the 0.208 drag coefficient. The end result is quite remarkable when you take into account the roof hosts the LiDAR and cameras, which stick out from the body, thus impacting the vehicle’s aerodynamics. The standard air suspension also helped achieve that number, as did the alloy wheels with a bespoke aero design and the door handles that remain flush with the body.

As a refresher, Nio touts a generous maximum range of 620 miles with the giant 150-kWh solid-state battery pack (available late 2022), although that number is based on the NEDC test cycle. There’s also a 100-kWh battery promising 435 miles and a smaller 70-kWh with enough juice for 311 miles. One major feature we mustn’t neglect is the car’s battery-swapping capabilities, a process that will take less than three and a half minutes.

The ET7 is powered by a dual-motor setup with a combined 644 hp and 627 lb-ft (850 Nm), good for a sprint to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 3.9 seconds, making it one of the quickest-accelerating sedans out there. It’s no Model S Plaid, but it will be fast enough for the vast majority of EV buyers.

After the EP9 sports car and the EC6, ES6, and ES8 SUVs, Chinese automaker Nio has introduced today a fully electric sedan. The ET7 is a handsome flagship with a sleek body featuring a drag coefficient of only 0.23. It’s almost 5.1 meters (200 inches) long and nearly 2 meters (78 inches) wide, making it bigger in both dimensions than the Tesla Model S and Porsche Taycan.

Nio has developed the ET7 to accommodate two types of batteries at launch, starting off with a 70-kWh pack offering more than 311 miles (500 kilometers) of range per NEDC. Step up to the larger 100-kWh battery and the range between charges jumps to more than 435 miles (700 kilometers). Towards the end of 2022, an even bigger 150-kWh battery will enable the zero-emissions sedan to travel for more than 620 miles (1,000 kilometers) on a single charge.

At the heart of the Nio ET7 is a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive setup with a combined output of 644 horsepower (480 kilowatts) and an instant torque of 627 pound-feet (850 Newton-meters). The powerful hardware enables the car to reach 62 mph (100 km/h) from a standstill in just 3.9 seconds. The stopping power is provided by Brembo brakes offered as standard equipment.

The ET7 is brimming with advanced technology, including a sophisticated autonomous driving system using no fewer than eleven cameras, 12 ultrasonic sensors, five radars, and more. The interior is also a technological tour de force by combining a fully digital 10.2-inch instrument cluster with a massive 12.8-inch AMOLED touchscreen. Nio has crammed in 23 speakers for the 1,000-watt sound system that comes as standard across the range.

Nio is already taking preorders for its stunning sedan, but the first customer deliveries are not expected to kick off before the first quarter of next year. The company has also disclosed pricing details, with the base model equipped with the 70-kWh battery starting at 448,000 yuan (about $69,200) or 378,000 yuan ($58,300) if you opt for the battery as a service (BaaS), which is essentially a subscription for the battery pack at 980 yuan ($151) a month.

The mid-range ET7 with the 100-kWh costs from 506,000 yuan ($78,100) or 378,000 yuan ($58,300) with BaaS, in which case the owner pays 1,480 yuan ($228) per month. There’s also a fancier ET7 Premier Edition with this battery from 526,000 yuan ($81,200) or 398,000 yuan ($61,500) plus 1,480 yuan ($230) / month with BaaS. All prices exclude any applicable subsidies.

As a final note, it’s important to note the ET7 has been engineered with battery-swapping capabilities and the biggest of the three battery packs is actually a solid-state battery. The company says it takes less than three minutes to complete a battery swap and the whole process is automatic through a dedicated battery swap station of which Nio aims to have 500 operational by the end of this year.
