Ram has been teasing a battery-powered 1500 for over a year now even though the production model won’t arrive until 2024. In the meanwhile, parent company Stellantis has decided to preview the electric truck once again, this time during a conference outlining its long-term strategic plan. The shadowy silhouette comes along with some bold promises made by CEO Carlos Tavares:

“According to our internal performance index, our Ram 1500 will outperform all competitors on the attributes customers care most about: range, towing, payload, charge time. Really thrilling! No doubt we will bring the best electric truck to the market.” He went on to reiterate the Chevrolet Silverado EV and Ford F-150 Lightning competitor will sit on the STLA Frame architecture, which is being specifically developed for fullsize electric trucks and SUVs.

A recent report states the Ram 1500 won’t be sold only as a pure EV as the engineers are also planning to install a combustion engine. It’s unclear whether it will be a hybrid in the traditional sense of the word, but we do know the ICE will work as a range extender. We’ll have to wait and see whether the gas engine will drive the wheel or its role will be strictly to recharge the battery on the go.

The STLA Frame platform is being conceived to accommodate huge battery packs with a capacity of more than 200 kWh. Ram has touted an impressive range of 500 miles (805 kilometers), but that figure will greatly vary depending on how much towing you’ll be doing. It’s going to have four-wheel drive, so there will be one electric motor at the front and another at the rear.

When it does eventually arrive, the Ram 1500 BEV (name not final) will also fight the Rivian R1T and the GMC Hummer EV, plus the Tesla Cybertruck provided it won’t be delayed again.

It was only a few days ago when Ram teased the first-ever electric 1500, but the company left out one juicy tidbit about its truck. Speaking at the 2022 Chicago Auto Show with Autoblog, company CEO Mike Koval Jr made an interesting disclosure about the hotly anticipated pickup. The Ford F-150 Lightning and Chevy Silverado EV rival will also be offered with a range-extending engine.

In other words, there will be two separate models: the purely electric 1500 and another fitted with a combustion engine. Both will be launched at the same time, and Autoblog believes the range-extended model will be based on the same truck. However, it’s unclear at this point whether the gasoline engine will be used to juice up the battery or it will power the wheels.

The addition of an ICE could be good news for those who do a lot of towing and are concerned electric pickups are not up to the job yet compared to gasoline- and diesel-fueled workhorses. Battery drain is a major concern when you’re hauling with an EV and fuels (pun intended) range anxiety. With a gasoline tank fitted to the truck, it would allow drivers to complete extended journeys without having to pull over to charge the battery.

As previously reported, the 2024 Ram 1500 BEV as it’s currently known by its official name is expected to ride on the STLA Frame platform. Parent company Stellantis has said the underpinnings will accommodate large battery packs with a capacity of more than 200 kWh, which should be good for 500 miles (805 kilometers) of range before having to recharge.

It’s getting an electric motor at the front axle and another one to drive the real wheels and enable 4WD as you would expect from a proper truck. Before the production version arrives in 2024, Ram will showcase a concept, likely later this year or in 2023.

We’ve double-checked the calendar and it still says February 8, 2022, and yet Ram is eager to tease an electric truck it will have on sale in 2024. In fact, the shadowy official renderings depict a concept that will preview the road-going EV truck, so better arm yourself with a lot of patience. With the GMC Hummer EV and the Rivian R1T out while the Ford F-150 Lighting is inching closer, the 1500 BEV will be fashionably late.

It will likely arrive after the recently unveiled Chevy Silverado EV, and provided it’s not postponed once again, after the Cybertruck as well. To mark the release of new teaser images, the company is launching RamRevolution.com where it will provide details and visuals about the electric truck’s development. In addition, customer input is accepted, so your brilliant idea might just make it to production.

Over the course of 12 months, Ram will organize a tour by attending various meets with truck customers to pick their brains about what they would like to see in their EV pickup. The feedback will be put to good use in the 1500 BEV, following the concept’s debut before 2024.

As previously announced, the zero-emissions truck will utilize the STLA Frame platform good for batteries as large as 200+ kWh. The largest pack is going to have enough juice for 805 kilometers (500 miles) in a truck featuring a four-wheel-drive system courtesy of two electric motors.

By the middle of the decade, Ram will have electrified most trucks ahead of 2030 when all of them will get the greener tech. The STLA Frame architecture will underpin a variety of other models, including commercial vehicles as well as fullsize SUVs.

As to when the concept teased here will debut, Ram hasn’t mentioned. However, with 2024 being the market launch, we could see the concept by the end of this year or early 2023.

It’s been quite an eventful day for Stellantis as the world’s fourth-largest car manufacturer announced its electric-centric agenda for the years ahead. After learning about Dodge’s radical plan to launch an electric muscle car in 2024 and Opel’s intentions to go EV-only by 2028, it’s now Ram’s turn to reveal what it’s working on.

During the news-packed Stellantis EV Day 2021, Ram showed a teaser image depicting a fully electric 1500 pickup truck scheduled to go on sale in 2024. The utilitarian vehicle has an impressively sleek profile, which makes us wonder whether we’re looking at the actual production vehicle or simply a concept. Either way, expect the full-width light bar to make it to the road-going vehicle, which will hopefully have a larger bed.

Technical specifications remain shrouded in mystery for the time being, although we do know the Ram 1500 BEV will ride on Stellantis’ upcoming STLA Frame architecture. It’s promising to deliver a maximum range of up to 800 kilometers (500 miles), although realistically speaking, the electric 1500 is unlikely to match that if you plan on fully loading the bed.

Coinciding with the electric pickup truck announcement is Ram’s reveal of a new motto: “Built to Serve a Sustainable Planet.” The company vows to offer a fully electric product in most of the segments it competes by the middle of the decade. In other words, it means the likes of the ProMaster and ProMaster City will get an EV derivative within the next four years. Why not all segments? Likely because Ram needs more time to roll out a fully electric heavy duty (HD) truck.

As a matter of fact, Ram pledges to “deliver a full portfolio of electric solutions for our all our segments” by the end of the decade. It goes without saying that will also include the heavy duty class.
