Rimac Nevera is considered today the fastest accelerating production road legal vehicle. The EV supercar can sprint from standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in under 2 seconds. Yet, the Croatia-based automaker believes they can build an even faster production series car. According to Matija Renic, the chief engineer behind the Nevera project, future EV supercars can perform the standard sprint in under 1 second.

Yet, Renic says that Nevera is not meant to be purely a drag strip king, but rather a car that’s enjoyable to drive in everyday conditions as well. Furthermore, the chief engineer says that Rimac wanted to build a driver’s car, engaging and very rewarding at the same time. With a one-foot rollout, the Rimac Nevera sprints to 60 mph in a mind-boggling 1.85 seconds. The 0-62 mph task takes 1.97 seconds while accelerating from a standstill to 186 mph is done in 9.3 seconds. Flat out, it will do 258 mph (412 km/h) and complete the quarter-mile in 8.6 seconds. Carwow’s Mat Watson drag raced the electric hypercar against a Ferrari SF90 Stradale and was clocked in at a record-breaking 8.62 seconds at 171 mph for the quarter-mile.

Equipped with four electric motors, the Nevera delivers 1,914 horsepower and 2,360 Nm (1,741 lb-ft) in a hypercar that weighs a rather substantial 4,739 lbs (2,150 kg). A good chunk of that weight is represented by the massive 120-kWh battery, promising to provide enough juice for 342 miles (550 kilometers) per WLTP.

Manufactured at home in Croatia, the new Nevera is limited to only 150 units available at €2 million a pop. The first year of production has already been sold out and Rimac promises there aren’t going to be two cars with an identical look.

Rimac took the hypercar scene by storm last year with the unveiling of the Nevera, an all-electric speed machine named after a powerful Mediterranean wind. Its technical specifications are nothing short of amazing thanks to quad electric motors producing a jaw-dropping 1,914 horsepower (1,408 kilowatts) and an instant torque of 2,360 Newton-meters (1,741 pound-feet).

The massive electric grunt enables the high-performance EV to hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in 1.85 seconds and 62 mph (100 km/h) in 1.97 seconds with a one-foot rollout. Perhaps more impressive is the time it takes to reach 186 mph (300 km/h) from a standstill – just 8.6 seconds. Flat out, it will do the quarter-mile in 8.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 258 mph (412 km/h).

Rimac will be putting all these numbers to the test later this year in an attempt to set some kind of record. Published on social media, an image showing the company’s blacked-out R badge on a Nevera is accompanied by the following caption: “R should stand for the record-breaker, right? Stay tuned, this year will be epic.” Given the quoted maximum speed, it shouldn’t be much of an issue to beat the Tesla Model S Plaid and its 175-mph velocity.

Tesla has said the Model S Plaid will eventually do 200 mph, but even so, it will fall short of the Nevera’s 258-mph speed. Other fast EVs include the Lotus Evija and the Automobili Pininfarina Battista, but not even those two high-end EVs will be able to match Rimac’s new electric vehicle limited to just 150 examples at $2.4 million a pop.

The record alluded by the Croatian company might not necessarily be related to a top speed, but also to acceleration. For example, it might go after the Koenigsegg Regera’s 0-249-0 mph (0-400 km/h) record of 31.49 seconds. Given the instant torque delivered by the four e-motors, there is a distinct possibility the Nevera will improve that record.

Another record that springs to mind is for the fastest production EV around the Nürburgring, which seems doable as well. According to Elon Musk, the Model S Plaid lapped the Green Hell this past fall in seven minutes and 31 seconds, but we’re fairly sure there’s plenty of room for improvements with an electric hypercar.

Cars equipped with combustion engines have held speed records for more than a century, but it’s time for EVs to grab all the speed crowns. The Rimac Nevera has all the ingredients to be the quickest-accelerating production car ever thanks to its quad electric motor setup producing a massive 1,914 horsepower and an instant torque of 1,741 pound-feet (2,360 Newton-meters) of torque.

Brooks Weisblat from DragTimes put those numbers to the test by taking the Nevera to the drag strip for a few quarter-mile runs. Even with the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires cold, the all-electric hypercar still managed an 8.74-second sprint at 165.5 mph (266.3 km/h). His second outing with the Croatian EV speed machine included a burnout, which improved the quarter-mile time to 8.61 seconds at 167 mph (268.7 km/h).

His third and final run was the record-breaking attempt as the Nevera needed merely 8.58 seconds to complete the quarter mile at 167.5 mph (269.5 km/h). It’s now officially the quickest-accelerating production car ever, beating even Rimac’s own estimate of 8.6 seconds. It should be mentioned the quad-motor EV beast wasn’t subjected to any changes as the car was completely stock, meaning customer cars will deliver this neck-snapping acceleration.

It seems highly unlikely a standard Tesla Model S Plaid will ever beat these numbers, but then again, it’s not a fair comparison as the Nevera is fully fledged hypercar whereas the Model S is still a luxury sedan at its core. The Pininfarina Battista, Aspark Owl, Lotus Evija, and Tesla Roadster (whenever that arrives…) might try to dethrone Rimac’s electric beast, but in the meantime, the Nevera reigns supreme.

It certainly has to live up to the hype what with its €2-million price tag and the fact Rimac and Bugatti have now merged into a single company. The Nevera does deliver some mind-boggling acceleration when you take into account it’s not exactly light, tipping the scales at a hefty 2,150 kilograms (4,739 pounds). One of the reasons it’s so heavy is the large 120-kWh battery pack, which has enough energy for 550 kilometers (342 miles) of range in the WLTP cycle.

As a final note, the Rimac Nevera will be a rare sight as production will be capped at just 150 units.

Rimac is ready to take the hypercar segment by storm with the unveiling of its Nevera, a production version of the 2018 C_Two concept. Speaking of storms, the high-performance EV machine has actually been named after a Mediterranean storm and it’s a moniker quite fitting given the vehicle’s record-breaking acceleration.

Interestingly, Rimac has engineered its second EV to support 500-kW fast charging, meaning that it will take as little as 22 minutes to replenish the battery from 0% to 80%. The braking system is also quite impressive, featuring a carbon-ceramic Brembo setup with large 390-mm discs paired with six-piston calipers.

Manufactured at home in Croatia, the new Nevera will be limited to only 150 units available at €2 million a pop. The first year of production has already been sold out and Rimac promises there aren’t going to be two cars with an identical look. Aside from the GT, Signature, Timeless specifications, the niche performance brand says it will also offer a Bespoke option with greater customization options.

As a final note, it’s worth mentioning Porsche now owns a 24% share in Rimac, which is widely believed to play a role in Bugatti’s future. At the same time, Hyundai and Kia are investing in the Croatian electric hypercar marque for sports car applications, so the future of performance EVs sounds pretty exciting.
