Volkswagen ID Buzz Will Be Company’s Most Emotional EV, Says CEO

Volkswagen has been generating quite the buzz (pun intended) in the build-up to the world premiere of the production-ready ID. Buzz. Ever since the namesake concept was unveiled nearly three years ago, various company officials went on record to say this or that about the electric revival of the legendary Microbus. Case in point, CEO Ralf Brandstätter had a few words to say about the new EV.

In an interview with Autocar, VW’s head honcho promised the ID. Buzz will demonstrate the vehicle has been developed by “people who love cars.” He went as far as to say it’ll “definitely be the most emotional of our electric models.” The latter statement comes as somewhat of a surprise since the high-performance GTX versions of the ID.4 and ID.5 fit that bill as well.

The highest-ranked executive told the British magazine the 2022 ID. Buzz will help VW in its quest to evolve into “the most desirable brand for sustainable mobility.” The numerous teasers have revealed the largest electric model to ride on the MEB platform won’t look as exciting as the 2019 concept. Nevertheless, we still have high hopes the road-going model will add spice to an otherwise bland van segment.

It will be the first MEB-based EV to offer a commercial version as VW plans to sell the ID. Buzz in both passenger- and cargo-oriented configurations. Not only that, but a California camper will follow in 2025 when there are also plans to introduce an autonomous derivative for ride-hailing services. Unlike the ID.3 and ID.5, the boxy van will be sold in the United States where we’re only expecting to see the passenger model with a long-wheelbase setup.

The Hanover-built VW ID. Buzz will come in both rear- and all-wheel-drive flavors courtesy of a single- and dual-motor setup, respectively. At the top of the food chain should be the powertrain available in the GTX-badged SUVs where it pumps out close to 300 hp. A similar setup is offered in China for the three-row ID.6 SUV and its equivalent Audi Q5 E-Tron.
