When something seems too good to be true, it usually is. Such is the case of the Alpine A4810, a purely hypothetical hypercar designed by talented students from Istituto Europeo di Design. IED collaborated with Renault’s sporty brand to imagine a hydrogen-fueled performance vehicle for the year 2035. If you’re wondering about the meaning of its name, it represents a nod to the Mont Blanc’s peak, at 4,810 meters.

There are absolutely zero chances the Alpine A4810 will ever enter production, but that’s not stopping us from dreaming about it. The two-seater electric machine is quite large, measuring 5,091 mm in length and 2,010 mm in width. It sits dramatically low to the ground, at just 1,055 mm. IED has envisioned the hydrogen beast with a generous wheelbase stretching at 2,717 mm.

The outlandish virtual concept has almost nothing in common with the A110 on sale today, a mid-engined small coupe equipped with a turbocharged 1.8-liter gasoline engine. We can say the same thing about Alpine’s future models as the GT-X crossover, Renault 5-based hot hatchback, and coupe will all be battery-powered EVs.

However, parent company Renault is toying around with the idea of a hydrogen car. Not just any fuel cell vehicle, but one equipped with a combustion engine running on hydrogen. The idea is not entirely new as BMW has been experimenting with a similar powertrain for years. In addition, Toyota is currently testing the Yaris and Corolla with hydrogen-fueled combustion engines. As for Renault, it will unveil a concept car with this setup in May.

At the end of the day, the Alpine A4810 will likely go down purely as a design study. However, we wouldn’t necessarily rule out the possibility of some design cues trickling down to future production vehicles. One can only hope. In the meantime, it’s just wishful thinking on our part.

Alpine, a Renault subsidiary, will abandon the production of cars equipped with combustion engines in the coming years by retiring the mid-engined A110 coupe. The French niche marque has already teased three electric vehicles it will introduce in the coming years, with one of them being its first-ever SUV. It now finally has a name: GT X-Over.

In the announcement made today, Alpine also reveals production will take place in France at the Dieppe factory where the assembly is scheduled to commence by 2025. It will follow a performance version of the reborn Renault 5 due in 2024 and will arrive before a sports car co-developed with Lotus as a replacement for the gasoline-fueled A110 in 2026.

Details regarding technical specifications are scarce for the time being, but we do know the Alpine GT X-Over will ride on the same CMF-EV platform as the Renault Megane E-Tech Electric and the Nissan Ariya. The base version is said to make do with a single electric motor and front-wheel drive for 215 horsepower. However, Renault engineering boss Gilles le Borgne has already hinted at a more powerful version with AWD: “In the rear, we will have a big surprise.”

Given Alpina’s heritage, we are expecting the GT X-Over to be significantly lighter than the equivalent Megane E-Tech Electric, but that remains to be seen. 2025 is still a long way to go and many of the specs could change between now and then. Meanwhile, another legendary sports car brand is working on an electric SUV as Lotus will take the wraps off the Type 132 this coming spring.

By expanding their portfolios, both Alpine and Lotus will evolve into something more than niche automakers thanks to the support received from parent companies Renault and Geely, respectively. Alfa Romeo and Lancia, another troubled sports car marques, will also benefit from the backing of their owners – Stellantis.

It was back in January when Renault announced its performance division Alpine would evolve into an electric brand, signaling the EV transformation with a teaser image depicting the front-end designs of three cars. They’re now back in fresh imagery, and this time around, we’re being given a sneak preview of their side profiles.

The new photos were shared by Renault today as part of the ElectroPop online event during which it also teased the electric 5 supermini and provided a first glimpse at the 4ever, an upcoming EV harkening back to the Renault 4. The French company remains coy on details about Alpine, but it does say the first electric car of the trio will be released in 2024.

So, what exactly are we looking at?

The first of the bunch appears to be a hot hatchback and an educated guess tells us it will be a high-performance derivative of the aforementioned Renault 5. After all, Alpine did develop an amped-up version of the classic supermini, which UK readers identify as a Gordini since Chrysler owned the rights to the “Alpine” name at that time.

Both the Renault and Alpine versions of the new 5 will ride on the CMF-BEV platform, a brand-new electric car architecture that will slash production costs by 33% compared to the current Zoe. A range of up to 400 kilometers (249 miles) in the WLTP cycle is being promised, but with Alpine’s version focusing on performance rather than efficiency, the electric hot hatch might not be able to match the Renault-badged model’s range.

The next silhouette appears to represent an electric sports car bound to replace Alpine’s sole model, the mid-engined A110. The new EV is being co-developed with Lotus on a dedicated electric sports car platform, which will obviously serve as the foundation for a zero-emissions performance model from Norfolk as well.

Last but certainly not least is a teaser illustrating a larger coupe, perhaps a grand tourer with a 2+2 layout. Details about the third Alpine EV are shrouded in mystery, although it might ride on the new CMF-EV platform Renault is developing for C- and D-segment models with a WLTP range of 580 kilometers (360 miles). The underpinnings will deliver a multi-link rear suspension, a low center of gravity, and perfect weight distribution, thus making the platform suitable for a sports car application.

Note: Attached below is the original teaser from January.
