Mercedes has reached an important milestone by starting production of the first electric AMG sedan. The EQS 53 is now being assembled at the Sindelfingen plant aka “Factory 56” in Germany where it’s built alongside the regular EQS. At the same facility, the three-pointed star puts together its traditional flagship, the S-Class, in both standard- and long-wheelbase versions, plus the extra-long Maybach S-Class.

It should be noted this is not the first all-electric AMG in history as some will remember the short-lived Mercedes-AMG SLS Electric Drive launched in 2012. However, only nine examples of the zero-emissions supercar were ever made, thus making the EQS 53 the first AMG without a combustion engine to enter series production. Its price tag is also not as prohibitive since it starts at “only” €152,000 whereases the coupe was nearly three times more expensive.

The company opened the order books on December 14 for its high-performance electric sedan equipped with dual motors and all-wheel drive as standard. The AMG EQS 53 boasts 658 horsepower (484 kilowatts) and 950 Newton-meters (701 pound-feet) in its entry-level specification (if we can call it that way…), but an optional AMG Dynamic Plus package raises those output figures furthermore.

It unlocks the possibility of turning on boost mode when the car is in Race Start mode to unleash a whopping 761 hp (560 kW). It translates into a 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) run in just 3.4 seconds provided the battery’s state of charge is at least 80%. Flat out, it will do 155 mph (250 km/h), which is pretty good for an EV, especially since Mercedes says the AMG EQS 53 actually has an electronic top speed limiter.

Stick to the base version without the AMG Dynamic Plus package and the sprint takes 3.8 seconds and top speed – also limited – goes down to 137 mph (220 km/h). Regardless of choice, both come with a large 107.8-kWh battery pack that can be charged at up to 200 kW, which represents the equivalent of 19 minutes for 186 miles (300 kilometers) of range in the WLTP cycle.

There’s more to come regarding electric AMGs since the smaller AMG EQE 53 is likely slated to debut in 2022. Not only that, but both the EQE and EQS sedans will soon spawn SUV companions, and logic tells us those too will get extra oomph from the Affalterbach-based division. Our assumption is based on the fact Mercedes sells go-faster versions of its GLE and GLS combustion-engined vehicles.

Mercedes is intensifying its electrification efforts in the performance segment with AMG-branded versions of the EQS and the EQE sedans. At the same time, it’s investing in powerful plug-in hybrids as demonstrated by the GT 63 S E Performance and the AMG One hypercar arriving in 2022. The former has a whopping 831 horsepower on tap while the latter is expected to offer more than 1,000 hp.

A new report from Auto Bild claims another member of the AMG family will be electrified, namely the second generation of the GT Coupe. Based on the recently unveiled SL roadster, the Porsche 911 rival from Affalterbach is believed to borrow styling cues from the AMG One and merge them with the hardware of the GT 63 S E Performance to create an impressively powerful and fast coupe.

While the regular versions of the GT Coupe are expected to mirror the SL 55 and SL 63 soft-top convertibles with their V8 engines, the PHEV is said to sit on top of the lineup with more than 800 hp. It too will have a 4.0-liter, twin-turbo gasoline mill, but it’ll work together with a rear-mounted electric motor as well as a battery pack.

Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe

In the GT 63 S E Performance, the plug-in hybrid system is good for 1,400 Newton-meters (1,033 pound-feet), which would be sensational to have in a lighter, more track-focused coupe. It remains to be seen whether AMG’s engineers will be able to cram in the complicated powertrain into the next GT Coupe as we can assume there are some packaging constraints.

Auto Bild is confident it will happen, and logic tells us the PHEV AMG GT Coupe will go up against the already confirmed hybrid version of the Porsche 911. Zuffenhausen’s iconic sports car is slated to arrive in the coming years and rumor has it power will hit the 700-hp mark. However, the extra hardware will increase weight by 100 kilograms (220 pounds) compared to the regular flat-six models. Needless to say, the AMG GT Coupe will also gain some weight if a PHEV will be happening.

The conventionally powered two-door sports car from Mercedes-AMG could debut as early as 2022, although logic tells us a potential electrified derivative will arrive later in the life cycle.

The new wave of electric vehicles has taken many shapes, from hatchbacks and sedans to SUVs and pickup trucks. We’ve also seen wagons without an internal combustion engine, but there’s one body style that has yet to lose the ol’ gasoline/diesel engine. We’re talking about the convertible, which is currently not available in EV form.

Tesla might have unveiled the second-generation Roadster back in 2017, but the model has been delayed several times and won’t hit the market until at least 2023. In the meantime, Mercedes-AMG is open to the idea of developing a zero-emissions car with a folding top, even though customer demand for convertible has gradually dropped in the last couple of decades.

Speaking with Top Gear magazine, Mercedes’ chief operating officer Markus Schäfer referred to an EV cabriolet as a “very attractive product and an emotional product that builds the brand.” He went on to say the boys and girls from Affalterbach will have to put their “thinking caps on and engineer an EV in the form of a roadster.”

With AMG preparing for the inevitable all-electric future, Schäfer told TG the high-performance division “will definitely think about a cabriolet as well.” Meanwhile, the closest thing to an electric convertible is the Fiat 500 Electric Cabrio, but that one is not a full convertible as only the central roof section retracts, with the pillars shared with the regular hatchback version.

It seems unlikely an electric roadster ranks high on the list of priorities for Mercedes considering the German luxury brand has a lot on its plate right now regarding the expansion of its EV portfolio. The EQS is coming out this year and is bringing along an AMG version, while the smaller EQE was unveiled earlier this month at the IAA show in Frankfurt.

Come 2022, the two electric models will both spawn SUVs, with a third electric high-riding model arriving in 2024 as the EQG. It’s not just the Mercedes brand that’s going electric, but also Maybach and AMG are preparing for the irefutable demise of the combustion engine.

Mercedes’ performance division AMG is about to enter a new era as the talented folks from Affalterbach are days away from unveiling a plug-in hybrid model. Based on the GT 63 S, the newcomer will rival the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid by combining a powerful V8 engine with an electric motor. A new teaser image shows the car’s side profile, but the interesting part is at the back.

Barely noticeable, the cap on the rear bumper hides the charging port as owners will be able to plug the car in and recharge its 6.1-kWh battery. Electric range will likely be limited to only a few miles since the hybrid component of the powertrain will mainly be about performance. Slated to offer all-wheel drive, the new PHEV is expected to deliver roughly 800 horsepower and a mountain-moving peak torque of 738 lb-ft (1,001 Nm).

AMG has already promised the new hybridized performance machine will reach 60 mph from a standstill in less than three seconds. That’s an impressive feat considering the five-door liftback model will be quite heavy, what with the non-electrified AMG GT63 S already weighing nearly 4,800 pounds (more than 2.1 metric tons). Adding the electrified bits will certainly increase weight furthermore and yet the car will be one of the quickest-accelerating models to ever carry the three-pointed star.

This level of performance, luxury, and practicality will come at a steep cost, and while AMG hasn’t said anything about the start price, an educated guess tells us it’s going to be around $200,000. The aforementioned GT63 S already costs over $160,000 and you can rest assured the PHEV upgrade will command a significant premium.

The world premiere is scheduled for September 1, prior to a public debut at IAA Munich in Germany later next month. The plug-in hybrid model will be showcased alongside the AMG EQS electric sedan as the first series-production EV from AMG after the short-lived SLS Electric Drive from the previous decade.

We usually associate PHEVs with cars primarily built with fuel efficiency in mind, but for AMG, a plug-in hybrid is first about performance and then about lowering fuel consumption. Case in point, the upcoming electrified version of the GT 4-Door Coupe will combine a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine with an electric motor for a total output slated to exceed 800 horsepower.

A teaser image announces the world premiere is scheduled to take place on September 1 ahead of the public debut bound to take place a few days later at the IAA Munich show in Germany. Believed to be called the AMG GT 63 E Performance, the new go-faster PHEV will be Mercedes-AMG’s belated answer to the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid, another luxury grand tourer with a plug-in hybrid system.

You’re looking at an electrified performance machine expected to cost somewhere in the region of $200,000, making it one of the most expensive new Mercedes/AMG models ever. It’s essentially an AMG GT 63 S with an electric motor mounted at the back where there’s also going to be a limited-slip differential and a two-speed transmission.

Mercedes’ performance division has previously said the electric motor will offer a continuous power rating of 70 kilowatts (94 hp) and a peak output of 150 kW (201 hp), available for just 10 seconds. The e-motor’s 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) torque is going to be delivered instantly while a battery pack with a capacity of 6.1 kWh and weighing 196 lbs (89 kg) will provide the necessary energy.

AMG’s first plug-in hybrid with four doors has already been confirmed to complete the 0 to 60 mph task in under three seconds, thus making it just as quick as hypercars from not that long ago. It will be joined at IAA Munich by the AMG EQS – the first fully electric performance model from Mercedes’ sub-brand after the short-lived AMG SLS Electric Drive.

Also at the show in Germany, we’ll get to see the production-ready EQE electric sedan and a concept for the Maybach EQS SUV.
