A shadow of its former glory, Chrysler is down to just two ancient products – the 300 sedan and the Pacifica minivan. Parent company Stellantis has vowed to invest in all its 14 brands for a period of 10 years, and the North American marque will benefit from the same treatment. In a bid to show some signs of life, the Auburn Hills-based company introduced this week the Airflow concept in Las Vegas for the 2022 CES.

The electric crossover’s debut comes along with two additional major announcements made by Chrysler. The company’s first production vehicle to do away with a combustion engine is scheduled to arrive in 2025. That frankly seems quite late since the battle in the electric car segment is heating up already, but as the saying goes, better late than never. Three years later, the lineup will exclusively consist of EVs as 2028 is the cutoff date for the ol’ ICE.

Chrysler doesn’t go into any details about which car will go down in history as the firm’s first zero-emission model. The Airflow looks close to production even though it’s officially billed as a concept. This tells us the crossover might very well become the first EV to carry the corporate winged logo, but nothing is official at this point. After all, 2025 is still a long way and a lot could change in these three years.

According to Chris Feuell, Chrysler Brand Chief Executive Officer, “the Chrysler Airflow Concept represents the future direction of the Chrysler brand, providing a peek at the dynamic design, advanced technologies, and seamless connectivity that will characterize the full electric portfolio we plan to reach by 2028.”

An electric crossover to go up against the likes of the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Volkswagen ID.4, and Tesla Model Y would make sense, but as we said before, Chrysler is surely taking its sweet time. The 96-year-old automaker will be playing the catch-up game for a long time in the EV race, but with Stellantis determined to give the brand a future through significant improvements, there is still hope for the troubled carmaker.

At long last, Chrysler has fully revealed the Airflow concept. Debuting this week at 2022 CES in Las Vegas, the electric crossover was subjected to a long teaser campaign, which started at the same event a couple of years ago. The EV then evolved to a closer-to-production guise for the Stellantis EV Day last summer and was previewed once again during the Stellantis Software Day in December.

Since the concept car’s design inside and out should be familiar to most of you by now, we’ll jump to the technical specifications released by Chrysler. The Airflow is equipped with a pair of electric motors, one for the front axle and the other driving the rear wheels. Each produces 201 horsepower (150 kilowatts) for a grand total of 402 hp (300 kW) delivered to the all-wheel-drive system.

While details about the battery pack have not been specified, we do know the purely electric crossover can cover anywhere between 350 to 400 miles (563 to 644 kilometers) on a single charge. Chrysler mentions the Airflow has been conceived to support over-the-air updates, which should bring improvements in terms of efficiency since other automakers have pushed OTA updates live for extra range. However, this is still a concept car at the end of the day.

Being the first new Chrysler in a long time, it should not come as a surprise the Airflow is far more technologically advanced than the ancient 300 sedan and Pacifica minivan – the two remaining products of the fabled but troubled North American brand. Case in point, it has been envisioned with a level 3 autonomous driving system featuring support for OTA updates.

The concept sits on massive 22-inch wheels and boasts a spacious interior courtesy of a long wheelbase made possible by utilizing a dedicated electric car platform. The four-seat cabin is chock-full of displays as we counted four in the front and two in the back as part of the rear-seat entertainment system. These have fully replaced conventional buttons as virtually all functions are accessible through the plethora of touchscreens.

While the Airflow won’t be going into production, Chrysler does promise to launch its first EV in 2025 and become a purely electric brand by 2028.

At long last, it would appear Stellantis is finally ready to give Chrysler the attention it deserves as one of the oldest automakers from North America is in desperate need of new products. After showcasing the Airflow Vision at the 2020 Consumer Electronics Show, an evolution of the futuristic concept will premiere on January 5 at the same event hosted in Las Vegas.

Chrysler has released several new images of its booth at the 2022 CES, which will include the electric crossover with a two-tone look by combining the predominantly white body with a contrasting black roof. It is believed a production version will arrive for the 2025 model year, meaning dealers could have the EV in their showrooms at some point in 2024.

The new concept has been previously teased a couple of times already, first this past summer during the EV Day 2021 and once again in early December during the Software Day 2021, with both events organized by Stellantis. The fourth-biggest car manufacturer in the industry has refrained from releasing any specifications, only showing off the attractive design and a high-tech cabin loaded with screens.

Early reports are suggesting the 2025 Chrysler Airflow will be underpinned by Stellantis’ STLA Medium platform and could come with a choice between two- and all-wheel drive. We do know the architecture is being developed to fit batteries as small as 87 kWh and as large as 104 kWh. The thriftiest EVs that will utilize the hardware should be able to cover 440 miles before having to recharge.

It remains to be seen whether the single-motor Airflow will send power to the front or the rear axle. There should be a dual-motor variant as well, complete with all-wheel drive. Stellantis has previously said an electric motor for a vehicle built on the STLA Medium architecture is going to develop at least 167 horsepower but no more than 241 hp. It could mean a flagship version of the electric crossover is going to pack as much as 482 electric horses.

When it does eventually hit the market, the Chrysler Airflow will have to face some stiff competition coming from the Tesla Model Y, but also newcomers like the Volkswagen ID.4, Volvo XC40 Recharge, and the Ford Mustang Mach-E.

Two – that’s how many products Chrysler has in its portfolio for the time being. To say the brand is a shadow of its former self would be quite an understatement considering one of the oldest North American automakers is in dire need of new vehicles. Parent company Stellantis has pledged to pour money into every one of its 14 brands over the course of the next 10 years, and that means Chrysler will finally be getting some love.

Leading the way will be an all-electric crossover. Originally unveiled as a concept car in early 2020 during the online-only CES event, the EV was shown in a closer-to-production guise this past summer while Stellantis had its EV Day 2021. Fast forward to December, the mysterious zero-emissions vehicle was previewed yet again, this time during the Software Day 2021.

Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares described it as being “more than a pure concept” and suggested the production version could hit the market by 2024. With Chrysler filing to trademark the word “Airflow” a couple of times in the past years, it’s no surprise there are firm plans to put the electric crossover on sale.

Technical specifications remain shrouded in mystery, but we’re getting the impression it will have a compact-to-medium size to fight the Volkswagen ID.4, Tesla Model Y, and the Ford Mustang Mach-E. As for the platform, it will certainly ride on one of the four architectures Stellantis has announced, quite possibly STLA Medium.

If our assumption is correct, the world’s fourth-largest automaker has previously said STLA Medium will support EVs with batteries varying in capacity from 87 to 104 kWh, providing a maximum range of 440 miles (708 kilometers). The underpinnings are being developed for vehicles measuring 165.4 – 196.9 inches (4200 – 5000 mm) long with power ranging from 168 hp to 443 hp for dual-motor configurations with all-wheel drive.

Stellantis also provided a peek inside the Airflow’s interior cabin with its plethora of screens and all the technology you could ever want from a compact crossover. Not only was there a screen for the front passenger, but also a rear-seat entertainment system came along with a pair of displays. The infotainment consisted of a massive tablet-like touchscreen complemented by a secondary display mounted lower on the center console.

There’s still no exact word from Stellantis or Chrysler regarding the EV’s launch, but considering the concept had traditional side mirrors as well as the orange markers mandatory in the United States, it could arrive in a couple of years. Our money is on a 2024 launch, potentially as a 2025MY. When it will eventually arrive, the Airflow will have support for over-the-air updates, unlocking the possibility to add features even after buying the vehicle either by paying a one-time fee or a subscription.
