Currently, the BMW i4 eDrive35 stands as the most affordable electric BMW available. Since the iX1 is not available in the United States, the i4 serves as our gateway into Bavarian electrification. As a result, it is expected to become one of the most popular BMW EVs on the market, if not the most popular. Fortunately, BMW is introducing new options and packages for the 2024 model year i4 eDrive45, much to the delight of potential customers.

The 2024 i4 eDrive35 can now be ordered with several new packages: the M Sport Package, Convenience Package (ZCV), and Premium Package (ZPP). The Convenience Package includes lumbar support, heated front seats, Iconic Sounds Electric, and wireless charging. On the other hand, the Premium Package incorporates everything from the Convenience Package but also adds a heated steering wheel and the curved display with a head-up display.

Unfortunately, there is no information available regarding the pricing of these packages or any new individual options that may be offered. However, one notable new option for the i4 is the Icon Adaptive LED Headlights with Laserlight. Additionally, it remains unclear whether the BMW i4 will receive any new standard equipment. Nonetheless, there is news of a slight price increase for the i4, with a $200 bump from $52,000 to $52,200.

The BMW i4 eDrive35 serves as the entry-level model and is the least powerful and fastest variant in the lineup. It utilizes a single rear electric motor, which is the same motor found in the pricier i4 eDrive40. However, the motor is detuned for the base model, producing 282 horsepower compared to the 335 horsepower of the more expensive version. The entry-level i4 also offers a slightly lower maximum range of 256 miles, while the higher-end model can reach up to 301 miles. Nevertheless, the performance discrepancy is minimal, as BMW claims a 0-60 mph time of 5.8 seconds for the base model, just 0.3 seconds slower than the more expensive variant.

For many customers, outright performance and range are not the primary concerns when choosing an electric vehicle. Instead, they seek comfort, well-equipped features, and practicality, especially at a lower price point. With the introduction of these new optional extras, the BMW i4 eDrive35 is poised to become even more appealing to potential buyers. BMW’s intention is to make the model even more popular than it already is. Moreover, the i4 eDrive35 presents a more cost-effective option overall, allowing customers to acquire a well-rounded electric car with decent range at an attractive price.

The BMW i4 media roll-out continues in Washington where the new electric Gran Coupe stopped last week. The i4 Gran Coupe was unveiled first to the media in Los Angeles and BMWBLOG covered the event here and here. But now the media on the East Coast will have the chance to experience and sample of the advanced tech features of the i4. As always, BMW has decided to snap some photos to promote the car.

This one of the few times where the i4 was shown outside into the real world, so that makes these photos even more intriguing. The car displayed is the BMW i4 eDrive40. The entry-level i4 will be the electric equivalent of a BMW M440i-ish, while the BMW i4 M50 will sort of take on an M4 Gran Coupe role, thanks to its massive performance.

The BMW i4 eDrive40 uses a single, rear-mounted electric drive unit that makes 335 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. It will have a range up to 300 miles and a 0-60 mph time of around 5.7 seconds. So it packs M440i-ish power but has the performance of a 430i. However, the top model BMW i4 M50 gets a whopping 536 horsepower and 586 lb-ft of torque. That means the most powerful 4 Series of all is not only electric but also tuned by the M Division. According to BMW, max range is around 235 miles and 0-60 mph happens in 3.9 seconds. That makes it more powerful than the Model 3 Performance but, likely due to weight, a bit slower on paper.

The i4 M50 also gets a SPORT Boost function increasing the system’s combined drive power by 67 hp to its maximum of 536 hp for over ten seconds. At the same time, combined torque is upped by 48 lb-ft to 586 lb-ft. The extra burst of acceleration is accompanied by an M-specific soundtrack.

Both cars get an 81.5 kWh net-energy battery pack (f 83.9 kWh gross) that’s as sustainable as absolutely possible. The high-voltage battery in the i4 is comprised of four modules with 72 cells each and three 12-cell modules. The i4 can charge at up to 200 kW, with a compatible DC fast charger. At that speed, the BMW i4 40 can recharge 102 miles of range in just ten minutes, while the i4 M50 only gets 87 miles of range in the same time. It can also charge at 11 kW from a Level 2 home charger, which will take eight hours to fully charge the battery.

The U.S. market launch is expected in Q1 of 2022. The BMW i4 eDrive40 starts with an MSRP of $55,400 and $65,900 for i4 M50. Plus $995 Destination. BMW is still taking pre-orders, in case you’re interested.

The BMW i4 is still about a year away from its official market launch. But several countries are already taking orders of the new electric car. Today, BMW Australia announced that the pre-order bank for the i4 is now open. Through a dedicated pre-order page, customers were able to reserve an i4 model for $500. There is no official pricing yet, but the range of i4 models is likely to start in the $50,000 range and up to $70,000 for the top model with a lot of options.

“Those who reserve their i4 and place a $500 deposit will have the opportunity to specify their vehicle later this year in coordination with their preferred BMW dealer when more detail is released about the model line-up, specification and equipment offerings,” BMW said in a statement.

The BMW i4 model line will cover driving ranges of up to 590km (WLTP) and up to 300 miles (EPA). With a power output of up to 390kW / 530HP the BMW i4 can accelerate from zero to 100km/h in around 4 seconds. BMW won’t yet reveal the naming convention and full details, but we’ve already learned in the past that the i4 will be available in three power versions: eDrive35, eDrive40 (both with exclusive rear-wheel drive) and the range-topping M50 (available exclusively with xDrive and specific M Performance individualization). The eDrive35 and eDrive40 models will likely come with lower outputs and slightly reduced all-electric range, below that of the i4 M50 (possibly around 450 km – 500 km).

When the BMW i4 finally hits the road, it’s main target will be the Tesla Model 3. While the i4 isn’t exactly the electric 3 Series that we all would hope BMW would build to take Tesla head-on, it’s close enough.

Now that the Tesla Model 3 is here, you’d figure more and more premium brands would be jumping on the mid-size electric sedan scene. Fortunately, BMW is doing just that, by introducing an entirely electric 3 Series.

Unfortunately, it’s only coming to the Chinese market. Some new spy photos have emerged, showing off this new BMW 3 Series electric, only further tempting us with something we can’t have. (We don’t own the spy photos but they can be seen here)

In these photos, we see a G20-gen 3 Series doing some camouflaged testing on the road. It’s been awhile since we’ve see a G20 wrapped in camo, which tells us that this is a new model. The badges on the car say that it’s an “Electric Test Vehicle”, which isn’t uncommon to see, as all EVs test mules get that badge.

Admittedly, that sign can be for plug-in hybrids as well. However, considering the fact that we’ve already seen the new 3 Series plug-in — the 330e — this is unlikely to be it. It also has no exhaust pipes at all. So it stands to reason that this test mule is an all-electric 3er.

From what we’ve been told, the BMW 3 Series electric is going to be a Chinese-market only car. In these photos, it seems as if it’s testing somewhere in Europe, judging by the license plates. However this could just be for testing. After all, we’ve heard directly from BMW that the 3 Series electric won’t be coming to most markets, with most of the world getting the BMW i4 instead.

According to Autocar, BMW design chief Domagoj Dukec recently told them “electrification is still at the point where some people doubt if they should go for it or not, and it’s still a little more expensive. So electric cars need more emotion, and we believe an electrified i4 makes more sense than an electric 3 Series.”

So if you want an all-electric BMW sedan, you’re going to have to wait for the i4. Considering it will pack over 500 horsepower and all-wheel drive, that doesn’t sound like too much of a compromise.
