After last year’s AMG EQS 53, Mercedes’ performance division is giving the go-faster treatment to the smaller sedan as well. It too gets discreet styling upgrades over the Benz version, including the adoption of a modern Panamericana grille as a nod to the combustion-engined AMGs. Of course, those vertical slats were first seen back in the 1950s on the 300 SL (W194) race car.

The AMG EQE 53 doesn’t look substantially more aggressive than the standard Mercedes-Benz EQE 350 introduced last year. Aside from the grille, it boasts a trunk lid spoiler and mildly revised bumpers with a somewhat sportier design. It has also been fitted with bespoke wheels measuring either 20 or 21 inches, with both being aerodynamically designed. Being the hotter version, it’s offered with ceramic brakes for superior stopping power provided you opt for the larger alloys.

Inside, the most significant upgrade is the adoption of AMG front seats with greater lateral support and unique upholstery featuring contrasting red topstitching. The EQE 53 will also be offered in Nappa leather as an alternative to the standard MB-Tex finish with microfiber. These fancy seats have the AMG logo on the headrests along with AMG badges on the backrests.

To separate it from the Benz version, AMG fits the hotter EQE with sports pedals and a flat-bottomed steering wheel covered in Nappa leather. The driver can switch between several recuperation levels by using the shift paddles mounted behind. Rounding off the tweaks are the AMG-branded floor mats and illuminated door sills.

Unlike the EQE 350 with a single electric motor powering the rear axle, the AMG EQE 53 adds a front e-motor to give the performance electric sedan an all-wheel-drive setup. The dual-motor configuration enables a meaty output of 617 horsepower and 701 pound-feet (950 Newton-meters) of torque. Getting the optional AMG Dynamic Plus Package raises those numbers to 677 hp and 738 lb-ft (1,000 Nm).

It also lowers the 0 to 60 mph run by two-tenths of a second to just 3.2 seconds. In addition, the AMG EQE 53 with the AMG Dynamic Plus Package has a higher top speed of 149 mph (240 km/h) vs 137 mph (220 km/h). Bear in mind the full output is only available if the car is in Race Start mode with the boost function turned on. Without it, power comes down to 617 hp, which is the same amount available in Sport+ model.

Switching to Sport mode lowers the total output to 555 hp, while the Comfort mode offers 493 hp at the driver’s disposal. Turning on Slippery mode will detune the powertrain to only 308 hp.

It uses the same battery as the standard model, namely a lithium-ion pack with a usable energy content of 90.6 kWh. Charing it at 170 kW brings 112 miles (180 kilometers) of WLTP range in only 15 minutes. It should be mentioned the acceleration numbers provided above are available only if the battery is at a state of charge of at least 70%. With the battery fully charged, Mercedes estimates the sporty electric sedan will cover up to 322 miles (518 kilometers) in the WLTP cycle before running out of juice.

Additional noteworthy features include the implementation of rear-wheel steering and an air suspension derived from the larger EQS. Also taken from Mercedes’ flagship is the Hyperscreen, an optional infotainment system with a massive touchscreen and another display just for the front passenger.

The 2023 Mercedes-AMG EQE 53 will go on sale later this year in Europe before arriving in the United States.

Mercedes unveiled the Tesla Model 3-rivaling EQE back in September 2021 at the IAA Munich show and now it’s getting ready to introduce the performance version. The first-ever AMG EQE 53 will premiere on January 16 at 00:01 AM CET, and in the meantime, a 26-second teaser shows what to expect.

It will be the second electric AMG in recent months following the introduction of the larger AMG EQS. Seeing as how the Benz-branded EVs share a lot of the design traits, it should be a similar story with the smaller EQE. Of course, the latter will be a sedan with a trunk lid whereas the flagship fullsize electric car from Mercedes has a more practical liftgate.

While the current EQE 350 makes do with a rear-mounted electric motor producing 288 horsepower and 391 pound-feet, the AMG 53 model should have 4Matic courtesy of a front electric motor. We are not expecting the full 751 hp and 752 lb-ft available in the AMG EQS 53 as that would enable the amped-up EQE to step on its bigger brother’s toes.

From the teaser video, we can observe the Mercedes-AMG EQE will be available with carbon-ceramic brakes featuring gold calipers. At the back, the trunk lid hosts a chunky spoiler lip and the AMG badging to denote it’s not your run-of-the-mill version. The 4Matic+ badge also makes an appearance, confirming the hot EV sedan has a pair of electric motors.

Mirroring the EQS 53, Mercedes-AMG has fitted its kid brother with a faux Panamericana grille derived from the combustion-engined models, which in turn took it from the 1950s 300 SL (W194). Expect bigger wheels and a lowered ride height courtesy of a stiffer suspension setup to sharpen up handling.

In terms of performance, the 2023 Mercedes-AMG EQE 53 should cover the 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) sprint in approximately 3.5 seconds at max out at roughly 150 mph when equipped with the AMG Dynamic Plus Package.

Also planned to debut this year are SUV versions of both the EQE and EQS, with AMG derivatives likely to follow at some point in 2023.

Complying with increasingly stricter emissions regulations is giving automakers serious headaches since engineers must constantly find ways to make combustion engines even more efficient. However, that’s still not enough, which is why the displacement of gasoline mills is decreasing and electrification is becoming the norm rather than the exception.

Case in point, the new Mercedes-AMG C63 coming next year will eschew its V8 engine in favor of a considerably smaller 2.0-liter, four-cylinder as part of a plug-in hybrid powertrain. A new report states the E63 will also catch the downsizing bug as Auto Express claims the high-performance sedan will also lose its twin-turbo 4.0-liter unit. However, rather than switching to a four-pot, the British magazine believes it will boast a six-cylinder unit.

That makes sense considering Mercedes is gradually phasing out its V6 offerings in favor of a newer, smoother, and thriftier straight-six unit. The 3.0-liter is already available in a number of models and logic tells us the engineers have developed the powertrain with electrification in mind. As a matter of fact, it already boasts mild-hybrid tech and is used not only in models carrying the three-pointed star, but also the Aston Martin DBX SUV in China.

2020 Mercedes AMG E63

In AMG’s “53” models, the inline-six is good for 429 horsepower and 384 pound-feet (520 Newton-meters). Adding an electric motor should bump those output numbers close to those of the current AMG E63 S and its meaty 603 hp and 627 lb-ft (850 Nm). While efficiency is likely to increase without losing power, weight is a real concern considering the super sedan is already heavy as it is. The extra hardware commanded by the PHEV would make it even more of a porker.

It’s going to be a long wait for the next AMG E63 since the standard Benz model was caught testing for the first time only a few days ago. The official debut of the regular E-Class is likely slated to take place by the end of 2022 or early 2023, with the AMG probably due roughly a year later.

Meanwhile, the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E-Performance is the flagship plug-in hybrid from Affalterbach with over 830 horsepower and a monstrous 1,400 Newton-meters (1,033 pound-feet) of torque.

Mercedes unveiled the production version of its EQS flagship electric car a little over a month ago and this spy video shows the company is already putting the finishing touches on the AMG version. Not that the standard Benz-branded EQS 580 4Matic is lacking in the power department as it packs a respectable 516 hp and 611 lb-ft (828 Nm) of torque.

The hot derivative tuned in Affalterbach has been spotted in busy German traffic with very little camouflage. The disguise only conceals the front “grille” where we are expecting the designers to come up with a special design to separate it from the lesser Benz model. Perhaps the menacing Panamericana grille with vertical slats seen on the traditional gasoline-fueled AMGs will be adopted by the zero-emissions models as well.

Presumably chunkier side skirts are the reason Mercedes-AMG decided to slap on some camo in that area, while the black and white tape at the back hides the integrated spoiler and a redesigned bumper. The prototype appears to be sitting a tad closer to the ground, thus indicating the AMG EQS will be getting a stiffer suspension setup for sharper handling. Look closer and you can see some thick wiring coming out of the front compartment and entering the car through the passenger door, presumably serving as a connection to a laptop inside used to measure certain parameters.

The high-performance derivative will boast an immense output of 761 horsepower, which should considerably lower the 0 to 60 mph time of 4.1 seconds needed by the EQS 580 4Matic. Whether the added electric punch will have a negative impact on range remains to be seen, but in the meantime, the standard Benz EQS promises to do 478 miles (770 kilometers) in the WLTP cycle.

If that horsepower number sounds familiar, it’s because the Porsche Taycan Turbo S has an identical output provided the Boost mode is activated. Some say the AMG EQS will be one of the quickest-accelerating production cars in the world by doing the sprint in less than three seconds, but that remains to be seen.

While the AMG EQS might be unveiled before the end of the year, it’s not expected to go on sale until later in 2022.

The SLS AMG Electric Drive launched in 2013 was a shy attempt from Mercedes-AMG as far as electrified performance machines. The quad-motor supercar was produced in extremely limited numbers, much like the Audi R8 E-Tron that followed a few years later. Both were sold in fewer than 100 examples and carried exorbitant price tags while offering a limited range since battery technology wasn’t as evolved as it is now.

Fast forward to 2021, Mercedes-AMG is inaugurating the E Performance label for go-faster hybrids and EVs. The first production cars part of the newly formed strategy will be the AMG One hypercar and this – the AMG GT73e. A prototype of the swoopy liftback has now been caught at the Nürburgring where it’s undergoing final testing.

The reason why it carries camouflage only on the bumpers is that the prototype doesn’t have all of the final bits in place as we’re expecting the GT73e to look more aggressive than the current range topper. That would have to be the GT63 S, offered with a monstrous 630 horsepower courtesy of a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8.

The plug-in hybrid version is expected to use the same combustion engine and add an electric motor for a combined output estimated at a little over 800 hp. While the power bump is undoubtedly healthy, some will be concerned about the PHEV’s weight considering the GT63 S is already quite heavy, tipping the scales at over 2,000 kilograms (4,409 pounds).

The prototype was being tested at the Green Hell at full tilt and we can see more than one GT73e being pushed to its limits. These procedures are necessary to iron out any last-minute issues before the start of production expected to occur in the coming months. Considering the current flagship version already hits 60 mph in 3.1 seconds, there’s a pretty good chance the plug-in hybrid will drop below the three-second mark.

When it debuts, don’t be too surprised if the GT73e is going to cost over $200,000 taking into account the GT63S carries a starting price of $161,900. It will be Mercedes-AMG’s belated answer to the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid and future performance-oriented PHEV machines Audi and BMW could launch in the coming years.

If you had doubts about the future of performance being electric or not, Mercedes is here to announce it’s working on a pure electric AMG that will be part of its dedicated EQ lineup of electric cars. Debuting later this year, the future zero-emissions model will boast two electric motors enabling all-wheel drive with variable torque distribution.

According to preliminary data obtained by the experts from Affalterbach, the overall performance is largely on par with current Mercedes-AMG models equipped with the ubiquitous twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 gasoline engine. The AMG-branded EV will be able to complete the sprint to 60 mph (96 km/h) in less than four seconds and top out at 155 mph (250 km/h).

The high-performance EV will feature an AMG-tuned air suspension specifically developed for these new applications that will eschew the combustion engine altogether. Not only that, but the car will also add an AMG i-Booster, which will combine electric recuperation and hydraulic braking during deceleration.

While work is well underway at an AMG EV, the first to arrive in terms of electrification will be a plug-in hybrid powertrain capable of producing more than 804 horsepower and a whopping 738 pound-feet (1,000 Newton-meters) of torque. These will enable AMG PHEVs to hit 60 mph in less than three seconds and offer immediate throttle response thanks to the added electric motor working together with the aforementioned eight-cylinder engine.

Yet another new breed of AMGs is in the offing, featuring a smaller four-cylinder 2.0-liter gasoline engine equipped with an electric exhaust-gas turbocharger. The electric motor built into the shaft of the exhaust-gas turbocharger will enable these cars to provide “lightning-fast response” and V8-like levels of performance.

The gasoline engine with the e-turbo will produce more than 442 horsepower and is going to work together with a rear-mounted electric motor, shared with the V8 PHEVs, generating up to 201 hp and an instant torque of 236 lb-ft (320 Nm) depending on the application. AMG promises the combined output will surpass existing non-hybrid V8 models, with the first model of the bunch to be the next-generation Mercedes-AMG C63 expected to go on sale in 2022.

At the forefront of Mercedes-AMG’s electrification agenda is without a shadow of a doubt the One hypercar of which deliveries to customers will finally commence later this year after a prolonged delay. The high-performance machine equipped with a Formula 1-derived hybrid 1.6-liter V6 engine is expected to deliver more than 1,000 horsepower, with final technical specs to be announced likely in the coming months.
