Nissan decided to inaugurate the CMF-EV platform dedicated together with Renault on a compact electric crossover unveiled in mid-July 2020. The Ariya has now been radically transformed into a purpose-built race car with a single seat to highlight the huge performance potential of the powertrain and how it could be used in a more exciting application.

The Ariya Single Seater Concept takes design cues from the crossover and applies them to a sharp race car with zero emissions with exposed rear wheels and no roof. The illuminated “V” shape at the front fascia is a nod to Nissan’s road-going vehicles and there is carbon fiber just about everywhere you look to shave off weight as much as possible.

The Japanese automaker goes as far as to say the Ariya electric race car “was shaped by the air itself” to emphasize the design was created with maximum aerodynamic efficiency in mind, therefore making the concept as sleek as possible. The exposed suspension arms at the front accentuate the raw nature of the racer, while the HANS-like safety device protecting the driver is a nod to Formula 1 cars.

Sadly, Nissan isn’t providing any technical specifications for its wildly designed zero-emissions race car. That said, we do know the range-topping Ariya electric SUV has a pair of electric motors, a battery pack with a usable capacity of 87 kWh (90 kWh nominal), and an all-wheel-drive system. It delivers a combined output of 390 horsepower (290 kilowatts) and 600 Newton-meters (443 pound-feet) of torque.

The electric crossover needs only 5.1 seconds to reach 62 mph (100 km/h) from a standstill and it will keep on going until it hits 124 mph (200 km/h). It goes without saying the Ariya Single Seater Concept would be significantly faster since its weight would be much lower than the hefty 2,200 kilograms (4,850 pounds) of the dual-motor Ariya.

If we were to wager, Nissan’s engineer would likely be able to shave off at least a quarter of the crossover’s weight for the electric race car, resulting in some serious performance on a circuit. However, the concept was conceived only to showcase the platform’s potential, with no intentions of actually building the speed machine.

It was the middle of July last year when Nissan originally unveiled the Ariya and yet it’s only now the electric SUV is making its debut in the United States. Arriving for the 2023 model year, the sister model of the Renault Megane E-Tech by riding on the same CMF-EV platform is available in North America with a choice between three front-wheel-drive models and a range-topping, all-wheel-drive version.

The most affordable version is the Ariya Venture+ FWD priced from $45,950 with a single electric motor developing 238 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque. Like the more expensive trim levels, it gets a liquid-cooled, lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 87 kWh. You’ll want to stick to this one for the longest range available as only this model promises to cover up to an estimated 300 miles.

Step up to the Evolve+ FWD from $48,950 and you get exactly the same powertrain, but more goodies such as an electric liftgate, LED fog lights, power panoramic moonroof, automatic windscreen wipers, eight-way power-adjustable front passenger seat, and wireless smartphone charging. This upper-spec trim also adds an electric glovebox, Intelligent Rear View Mirror, and underfloor trunk storage. Bear in mind this trim level lowers the range to 285 miles since the added kit increases the vehicle’s weight.

Up next is the Ariya Premiere FWD with the same electric motor and a 285-mile range. Priced at $53,450, it adds even more content, varying from ProPILOT Assist 2.0 and ProPILOT Park to illuminated side sills and 19-inch alloys with aero-optimized covers. The Nissan Ariya in this configuration also comes with a fancy “Premiere” emblem and multi-color LED ambient lighting.

The range-topping Ariya Platinum+ e-4ORCE AWD (from $58,950) has the most power but the least range. The dual-motor model with AWD packs a healthy 389 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque while its 87-kWh battery will last for as much as 265 miles between charges. It comes nicely equipped with Nappa leather, a 10-speaker sound system, and a hands-free tailgate.

The list with equipment for the all-paw Ariya also includes a memory function for the front passenger seat, 20-inch wheels, power tilt and telescoping steering wheel (with memory function), Active Sound Control, and electric mirrors with memory function and LED turn signals.

Nissan is taking orders on its official website in the US and says the first 10,000 reservations made before the end of January 2022 will come bundled with two years of free EVgo membership as well as $500 in charging credits, which represent the equivalent of about 5,000 miles of driving the Ariya Venture+

It’s going to be a long wait as the first customer deliveries in the US are scheduled to commence next fall, with FWD models having priority over the AWD-equipped Ariya.

It’s a bittersweet kind of day if you’re a fan of the Ariya, because even though Nissan is now accepting preorders in Japan, the electric SUV has actually been delayed. It was supposed to go on sale by mid-2021, but executive vice president Asako Hoshino told the media its rollout has been pushed back by a few months.

Why? You probably already know the answer to this question as the coronavirus pandemic corroborated with the chip shortage both impacted the Ariya’s launch. It will be hitting the market this winter, initially at home in the Land of the Rising Sun while the United States and Europe will have to wait an extra 1-2 months, according to Hoshino.

Nissan projects Europe will be the strongest market for the Ariya and expects tens of thousands of electric SUVs to be sold all over the world during the model’s first year on the market. The EV has been a long time coming taking into consideration the Leaf electric hatchback was introduced in Japan back in December 2010. Some have criticized Nissan for taking so long to introduce a zero-emissions dedicated SUV, but the wait is now over. Well, almost.

Nissan will be accepting preorders in international markets from late this year. Meanwhile, the limited edition models available in Japan start at 6,600,000 yen ($60,200) and go all the way up to 7,900,200 yen ($72,000). The most expensive of the bunch has the bigger 91-kWh battery (87 kWh usable) with enough juice for 360 miles (580 kilometers) of range based on the local WLTC Japan cycle.

This top-spec Ariya has all-wheel drive courtesy of dual motors providing a combined output of 389 horsepower (290 kilowatts) and 600 Newton-meters (443 pound-feet) of torque. The electric punch is good for a 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) sprint in 5.1 seconds and a top speed of 124 mph (200 km/h). These are impressive performance numbers taking into account the SUV’s weight varies between 1,900 and 2,200 kilograms (4,189 to 4,850 pounds) depending on the trim level and equipment.

Nissan dealers in the US have referred to the Ariya as a potential game-changer, so it’s safe to say they’re eager to get their hands on the hotly anticipated electric SUV. Renault will be unveiling its mechanically related Megane E-Tech soon, but sales won’t start until 2022.

Electric mobility is certainly not a new subject to study for Nissan, which has been present in the electric cars’ market since 2010, thanks to its record-breaking Leaf.

Today, the Japanese automaker is preparing to enter a new era in the field of zero emissions. It does so by presenting the Nissan Ariya, the first model resulting from the so-called Nissan NEXT strategy, which aims to introduce 12 new electrified models in the next 18 months.

The Nissan Ariya is based on a new platform, created specifically to host electric drivetrains. It can host different size of batteries. As a proof of this, the Ariya will be offered with two battery capacities: 63 kWh and 87 kWh.

The new Nissan Ariya will be available in a single motor, FWD powertrain and in a dual motor, AWD configuration. The all-wheel drive traction is obtained by putting a motor on each axle, making them completely independent one from another.

There will be five versions available.

  • Ariya 2WD (63 kWh) – 218 HP and 300 Nm of torque
    • Expected range: 360 km (223 miles)
  • Ariya 2WD (87 kWh) – 242 HP and 300 Nm of torque
    • Expected range: 500 km (310 miles)
  • Ariya e-4orce (62kWh) – 279 HP and 560 Nm of torque
    • Expected range: 340 km (211 miles)
  • Ariya e-4orce (87 kWh) – 306 HP and 600 Nm of torque
    • Expected range: 460 km (285 miles)
  • Ariya e-4orce Performance (87 kWh) – 394 HP and 600 Nm of torque
    • Expected range: 400 km (248 miles)

The adoption of the new platform has allowed designers to take advantage of greater freedom in defining spaces and volumes. The car has a crossover body with a coupe-like shape, similar to what German car makers keep pulling out these years.

Among the most identifying elements of the car we find the new “grilles”, which now have a glossy finish and a geometric pattern instead on the dark surface.

A lot of effort has been put inside, too. The Nissan Ariya uses two 12.3″ display, one for the digital instrument panel and one for the infotainment system. The car also makes use of a big new-generation head-up display.

Last but not least, the Nissan Ariya has got tons of technology in it, like the new virtual assistant which is activated by saying “Hi Nissan”, 360° radar and sensors, adaptive cruise control, and much more.

The base price for the new Ariya is going to be $40,000. Considering that the Nissan Leaf S starts from $32,000, that’s not bad at all.
