2023 Volkswagen ID Buzz Arrives In London Without Front Trunk

On the road to its hotly anticipated reveal, the ID Buzz has landed in the hands of car journalists invited by Volkswagen to get a first taste of the electric van. It took place this week in London where the company’s commercial division brought a prototype carrying the already familiar colorful prototype. Even though we’re still not allowed to take a peek inside, a couple of details have emerged.

Not that it comes as a big surprise, the VW ID Buzz doesn’t have a front trunk. Or, as the cool kids say, a frunk. We weren’t expecting it to have one seeing as how the van has an extremely short front overhang with limited room in front of the wheels. In addition, none of the other electric vehicles based on the MEB platform have a storage area at the front.

The lack of a frunk might come as a disappointment on the ID.3 hatchback and to a lesser extent on the ID.4, ID.5, and ID.6 models, but it shouldn’t be a concern for the Buzz. The loveable box on wheels will be by far the most spacious of them all, so you most definitely won’t be needing a second cargo area. Of course, it would’ve been nice to have one, but the ID Buzz is not the first dedicated EV to do away with the front cargo.

You can open that compartment since it still serves a functional role, although not to put your luggage. Instead, the front lid provides access to the washer fluid container. Some of the electric van’s internals can also be seen in the same area, but those should be of no concern to the owner. It’s unclear whether the test vehicle had a front-mounted electric motor. That said, all-wheel drive with around 300 horsepower as the ID.4 GTX seems like an educated guess.

We also get to learn where VW has installed the charging port owners will use to juice up the battery. It’s on the rear-right fender, just behind the wheel. Speaking of which, the battery is likely the same pack used by the ID.4 where it has a total capacity of 82 kWh of which 77 kWh is usable. Seeing as how the ID Buzz will carry more people and/or heavy loads that will put a strain on the maximum range, a bigger battery could be in the works as well.
