Mercedes unveiled the Tesla Model 3-rivaling EQE back in September 2021 at the IAA Munich show and now it’s getting ready to introduce the performance version. The first-ever AMG EQE 53 will premiere on January 16 at 00:01 AM CET, and in the meantime, a 26-second teaser shows what to expect.
It will be the second electric AMG in recent months following the introduction of the larger AMG EQS. Seeing as how the Benz-branded EVs share a lot of the design traits, it should be a similar story with the smaller EQE. Of course, the latter will be a sedan with a trunk lid whereas the flagship fullsize electric car from Mercedes has a more practical liftgate.
While the current EQE 350 makes do with a rear-mounted electric motor producing 288 horsepower and 391 pound-feet, the AMG 53 model should have 4Matic courtesy of a front electric motor. We are not expecting the full 751 hp and 752 lb-ft available in the AMG EQS 53 as that would enable the amped-up EQE to step on its bigger brother’s toes.

From the teaser video, we can observe the Mercedes-AMG EQE will be available with carbon-ceramic brakes featuring gold calipers. At the back, the trunk lid hosts a chunky spoiler lip and the AMG badging to denote it’s not your run-of-the-mill version. The 4Matic+ badge also makes an appearance, confirming the hot EV sedan has a pair of electric motors.
Mirroring the EQS 53, Mercedes-AMG has fitted its kid brother with a faux Panamericana grille derived from the combustion-engined models, which in turn took it from the 1950s 300 SL (W194). Expect bigger wheels and a lowered ride height courtesy of a stiffer suspension setup to sharpen up handling.
In terms of performance, the 2023 Mercedes-AMG EQE 53 should cover the 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) sprint in approximately 3.5 seconds at max out at roughly 150 mph when equipped with the AMG Dynamic Plus Package.
Also planned to debut this year are SUV versions of both the EQE and EQS, with AMG derivatives likely to follow at some point in 2023.
